Reindeer starving in Arctic as ice piles on top of snow
Fox News ^ | 12/10/2019 | Frank Miles

Reindeer in the Swedish arctic are facing food supply shortages and going hungry, thanks to climate change.

“If we don’t find better areas for them where they can graze and find food, then the reindeers will starve to death,” Niila Inga said.

His indigenous community herds about 8,000 reindeer year-round, moving them between traditional grazing grounds in the high mountains bordering Norway in the summer and the forests farther east in the winter, The Associated Press reported.

The reindeer already have been pressured by the mining and forestry industry, and other developments that encroach on grazing land. Now, their food is trapped under a thick layer of ice. The food is still there, but the reindeer can’t reach it. The animals grow weaker and females sometimes abort their calves while the survivors struggle to make it through the winter. …

Rudolf is going to starve and there will be no more presents for kids! The elves can't work on toys anymore because their shops are underwater.

We’ve got “climate crisis” and “climate emergency”, plus I may have read “climate catastrophe” somewhere.

Yikes. Can makeup fix that face?

Never mind her looking malnourished; she’s 16 but looks like she’s 11.

It’s a shame that Vincent Price has passed away. Because he’d be perfect as the lead in a campy horror movie based in your list.

Her vegan diet has clearly stunted her grown, both mentally and physically. Humans eat meat for a reason: we need it for proper development.

Wait a minute, if the oceans are rising, that means global cooling, or warming, or, err, umm...

Dang, can we get an authoritative PennState false liar or UN IPCC false liar to ‘splain it all to us ?

Who knew global warming would cause too much ice? I had such a bad science education.

Why can't they just feed the herd with hay? We've had a couple of hard winters in the West when animals couldn't reach grass and they airdropped hay.

I’m surprised they haven’t procured hay for them if these reindeer are their livelihood. 8,000 animals sounds like a lot, but they really aren’t. Hopefully something is done to procure some hay.

To the writer’s point about predators:

World Wildlife Federation has this to say:

Reindeer can be seen all over Norway, particularly in the country areas and tundra. ... Norway has around 50 wolves which are rarely a problem for visitors. As there are only 50 or so brown bears in Norway visitors are unlikely to see one.

So 100 total predators will adversely affect hundreds of thousands or reindeer?

[But he polar bears are happy with more snow and ice now.]

That was always BS propaganda. More snow and ice have always been bad for predators. It reduced the population density (i.e. availability) of prey, since fewer could survive in a given area. For predators, reduced prey density meant more periods of hunger between meals, with death from starvation a bigger risk.

The usual reason individuals of a population starve is that the population has become large relative to its food source. In this case, the northern deer population of Norway has been going up.
