Senator Elizabeth Warren envisions a future where our cars don’t run on gas but on the algae growing in our seas. That’s according to her “Blue New Deal” proposal out Tuesday that’s essentially a Green New Deal for the oceans. And what goes in our cars is only one quick example of the ways she would transform our relationship with the sea if she wins the presidency.
This idea of a Blue New Deal has been floated earlier this year. But Warren, whose array of comprehensive climate plans is really quite impressive, is the only presidential candidate so far to put out an oceans-focused environmental plan. Beyond algae for cars, the plan includes investing in efficient shipping ports and marine protected areas. And it couldn’t have come at a more timely moment.

As an engineer with multiple degrees and having been in the renewable energy business for now 30 years there’s a quick overview of renewable energy options and which work and don’t work
1- Photovoltaics are absolutely the best source of energy solar energy
2- Wind only works on a very large scale and only in very windy areas
3- Small hydroelectric works excellently but you have to have a significant drop in height and a constant flow of water on your property
4- Solar thermal works very well and is very in lexpensive but doesn’t work in the winter
5- Titdal energy only works in areas with very significant tides like the bay of fundy in Canada. He have to have a large bay which you can damn off as well
6- Wave energy is extremely difficult and it’s not realistic
7- Biomass consisting of agricultural wastes anything from the ocean like LG pictured here corn turned in death and off and what not are all dependent on photosynthesis to start which is only about 1% efficient
Furthermore any of these sources take energy to transmit the biomass into another form of useful energy i.e. ethanol
7- Ocean thermal energy conversion (Otec) Is doable but again you have to have a significant difference in thermal layers of the ocean with a fairly short distance offshore
