A majority of Germans are in favor of reducing Germany’s reliance on the United States militarily, according to a YouGov poll commissioned by the German news agency DPA.

According to the poll, 55% of Germans believe that European members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) should protect themselves from an attack without US help. In addition, a majority of poll participants believe the US should partially (23%) or completely (26%) withdraw its 30,000 troops stationed in Germany.

Conversely, 54% said NATO should work more closely with Russia rather than relying on deterrence. Meanwhile, 37% are for lifting sanctions against Russia relating to its conflict with Ukraine on the Crimean Peninsula, while 34% are against lifting such sanctions. […]

Merkel said last week that Germany is not in a position to defend itself alone. She also vowed to increase Germany’s defense spending to the NATO target of 2% of its gross domestic product “by the 2030s.” …

They are not a threat militarily, but without NATO they sure would be.

They wish this because the 50% of Eastern Germany is still communist. They want the old days of the Iron Curtain to return.

I agree too. Let the ill trained, poorly equipped Bundeswehr protect them from the Russian bear.

Has Germany ever been attacked without attacking someone else first?

NATO exists for US control and influence in Europe. NATO binds the EU to the USA in very important areas (defense and foreign policy), for better or worse.

You can’t influence or control a club in which you aren’t a member.

I personally feel Trump is ambivalent about NATO. Bashing them for more money is a reasonable and politically popular stance in the USA.

An outright proposal to dismantle NATO by any President would likely get them assassinated by the deep state.

Maybe so but the German military doesn’t have the heart or ability to do much. This isn’t the Germany of 1939.

Berlin and to some degree also Frankfurt are very socialist/leftist. And a lot of east Germany would love free stuff socialism.

Germany has 20% Turk population. TWENTY PERCENT.

I think a lot of people would be really shocked to learn that.

She also vowed to increase Germany’s defense spending to the NATO target of 2% of its gross domestic product “by the 2030s.”

Sounds great...until you recall the last promise she made in that regard was to increase to 1.5% by 2024. This means another half percent above that in perhaps as long as 16 years. That simply isn't serious.

NATO's founding purpose expired with the Soviet Union in '91. With the EU we have a GDP of $17.3 trillion as opposed to 19.4 trillion for the U.S. (2017 figures). The U.S. needs to step back and the EU step up, right now and not in the 2030's maybe.

The U.S. has a military presence in Germany to protect the rest of Europe from Germany.

That hasn't been true for more than 60 years.

The U.S. has a military presence in Germany because it's a good location from which to project power.

the Heinies

As a man descended from German immigrants, I resent that slur. They are NOT "Heinies".

They're Krauts.
