On this day [February 1] in 1887, Harvey Wilcox officially registers Hollywood with the Los Angeles County recorders office.
Wilcox, who had lost the use of his legs as a child due to polio, envisioned the land as the perfect site for a utopian-like community for devout Christians, where they could live a highly moral life free of vices such as alcohol (Wilcox was a prohibitionist). Daeida Wilcox called the new community Hollywood.

Oh well.
The best laid plans...
everything about the push to the Pacific coast in the decades following the Civil War is simply fascinating
Reminds me of the Ivy League universities which were established to teach God’s word.

Something went wrong somewhere.
Well that went horribly wrong.

And The Dude is right again.
Even before the Civil War from the Lewis & Clark Expedition to the Mountain Men and trappers, the Indian tribes, the various Gold Rushes, the proposals to build the transcontinental railroad, the Pony Express, building the transcontinental telegraph, water rights. It’s an amazing story.
I really like Irving Stone’s “Men to Match My Mountains: The Monumental Saga of the Winning of America’s Far West.”
I just read “My Sixty Years on the Plains: Trapping, Trading, and Indian Fighting,” a first-person account by W. T. Hamilton.
Remember when schools taught us about “Manifest Destiny”? I imagine those words aren’t used much any more. Or, if they are, they are used in the context of genocide of the natives.
That mountain with the Hollywood sign is one of the most famous mountains in the world. Can you name it? It is named Mount Lee. If the people on the Los Angeles City Council knew that the mountain has the same name as Robert E. Lee they would re-name it Mount 0bama.
Let’s keep this a secret.

Then the Satanists moved in and there goes the neighborhood~!
‘Reminds me of the Ivy League universities which were established to teach Gods word.”
Also why public schools were established...to teach children to read the bible.
... and then “progressives” and cultural marxism happened...
oh, wow, I didn’t realize Irving Stone wrote on the westward push! I love his Michelangelo, Van Gogh and Pissarro books!

:)
There is no heaven on Earth until Christ’s return.
Interesting the Wikipedia for Mount Lee doesn’t mention that.
Even pre-politically correct times, I don’t know that a confederate would be the best choice of name for a place in California — I quite appreciate the missionaries from Spain who laid the foundations for the city in 1871 naming it:
“El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Ángeles” - the town of our Lady, Queen of the Angels.”
And saints like San Francisco, San Diego, Santa Barbara, etc...
So sad that the heart behind the founding of these cities are just footnotes of history now or under assault by revisionists. :(
