Pete Buttigieg: A president to serve veterans

On Veterans Day, I had the privilege of welcoming Pete Buttigieg back to Rochester to unveil his policy to honor veterans and their families.
In July, Pete first visited Rochester and I had the opportunity to lead him on a downtown walking tour. I was struck by our many similarities. We had both grown up in Indiana, were both the first openly gay men to be elected to our offices, and had both served overseas.
So on Veterans Day, as we honored our fellow service members, I knew Pete felt the same complicated emotions many of us have on that day.
I deployed three times -- the last as a combat medic in Baghdad in 2006. I remember begging an Army medical group to allow me to go outside the wire with them on a mission. I wanted to see what they saw -- and boy, did I. But they did warn me. They said, Be careful what you wish for. Some things you cant erase after youve seen them.
Some see more than others, and some carry that burden for others. That year that unit lost their medic.
I was one of the lucky ones. I made it back, and I had it relatively easy when it came to re-adjusting to civilian life -- but it was certainly an adjustment.
I had trouble with loud noises and crowds. I couldnt sleep at night and I had immense survivors guilt. Why was I allowed to live when others were not?
But there are plenty who have it much harder. Im currently attached to a National Guard unit, and sadly this year, the National Guard has the grim distinction of having the highest suicide rates of all the militarys services.
We ask our soldiers, sailors, air men and marines to do jobs most wouldnt do -- and we have a responsibility to take care of them after they complete their mission. But its clear our obligation to care for these brave Americans is not met with the same level of commitment. We must do better.
The gaps in our care when we come home, certainly contribute to the things we see in the news: suicide, homelessness and substance misuse as a form of self-medication.
The greatest tragedy in our story as a nation is when those who have answered the call to serve become homeless. What kind of country have we become to allow someone who has risked everything to uphold our nations greatest values to become homeless.
So on Veterans Day, Pete offered more than thanks to his fellow service members, he offered solutions and a path to care for veterans -- not as a favor, but to keep a promise. He outlined an agenda that supports those on active duty and their families, heals the wounds of war for veterans after they return, and engages all Americans to enable our veterans and their families to thrive.
Pete is one of the only candidates to have served in the current war that we have yet to end, so he has a perspective that is too often missing from our national conversation. He knows first-hand that veterans and their families are not a problem to be solved, but a talent to be competed for.
Our nation deserves a leader who understands what sacrifice means and how to honor the promise we made to our service members. Thats why with great pride, I endorsed Pete Buttigieg to serve as our next commander in chief and president of the United States.
All those months ago, as we neared the end of our tour of Rochester, Pete shook my hand and said, Please let your community know, help is on the way.
On Veterans Day, I heard that same message. So on the night of Nov. 3, 2020, when we elect our next president, I hope I can tell my fellow veterans that help is on the way because Pete Buttigieg is now the president.

Omg. No. Actually according to my religion there are many, many worse sins than sexual. For instance, gossiping. It comes close after murder and is barely forgivable. Yet I and many people do it all the time. Im not perfect so I dont need to rant about personal sins of others. I believe that people are harsher to those with sins they personally find icky. Your sins are no better than Mayor Petes. You just dont like his.
You dont rant on and on about thieves. The personal ickiness to you is not a fair rating of someone elses sin.

But, you know you are sinning when you gossiping.
Homosexuals don’t think what they are doing is a sin, big difference.

A lot of people do not know they are winning when they are gossiping. And religious people know they are sinning when they have any form of extramarital sex. So your point doesnt really make sense.
My point is that everyone sins. Usually we allow Gd to sort it out and we dont worry about each others sins. But if the sin is yucky to you, you will dwell on the other persons sin, even if its not such a horrible sin.

My theology is just fine - and not because I am such an expert. Im not. But Dennis Prager is, and he would say what I said. Homosexual sex between two consenting adults is not that bad of a sin - there are so many much worse that you dont slam other people about and you leave it rightly to Gd to sort out. But the sin you find so icky, you (generic you) need to always get holier than thou about around here.

Prager and yourself are demented concerning homosexual matters.
Torah View on Homosexuality
"K'maase Eretz Mitzrayim asher yeshavtem ba lo sa'asu - like the practice of the land of Egypt in which you dwelled do not do" (Vayikra 18:3) (Side-note: The current year or right side of history mantra does not work in trying to persuade G-D)
This verse prohibits the most immoral forms of behavior - idolatry, incest, adultery, bloodshed, male and female homosexual activity and bestiality[1]. The prohibition against male homosexual behavior is repeated in Vayikra 18:22. Prohibited homosexual activity includes any non-platonic physical contact; even yichud (seclusion) with someone of the same gender is forbidden for homosexually active individuals[2].
In addition to its legislative content, this verse also provides a fundamental insight into human nature and propensities. The Torah emphasizes "asher yeshavtem ba - in which you dwelled"; but Jews of all generations most certainly know that we lived in Eretz Mitzrayim. The Torah's statement of the obvious warns us to be on guard against societal influence. We become susceptible to even the most egregious and vile forms of behavior if we do not guard against societal influence. "Human nature is such that a person in his beliefs, character, dispositions, and actions is drawn after his friends and colleagues and acts in the same fashion as his countrymen" (Rambam Hilchos De'os 6:1). (How to take such precautionary measures will, God willing, be discussed below.) Thus a full interpretive translation of the verse reads: the behavior of Eretz Mitzrayim, to which, having lived there, you may be inclined, is forbidden to you.
Ramban[3] comments that the descent to Mitzrayim foreshadows the current galus. He highlights the historical symmetry between the descent to Mitzrayim and the origins of the current galus. Sadly, we can highlight an additional point of symmetry. The "Mitzrayim" in which we find ourselves is also plagued by aberrant behavior, including the practice of homosexuality. Here too due to societal influence we have become susceptible to such behavior. Moreover, Mitzrayim of old not only engaged in corrupt behavior, it legitimized and mainstreamed such behavior. "Our sages said, what were they (i.e. Mitzriyim) accustomed to doing? Men married men and women married women
"[4] Similarly, the Mitzrayim of today's galus seeks to legitimize and mainstream the abominable practice (toeiva) of homosexuality. Frighteningly, we who live here are not only practically affected, but also axiologically and ideationally infected. Not only our behavior but our very Weltanschauung has been compromised and contaminated.
Let us illustrate and elaborate the effect of society's insidious influence regarding homosexuality. In a Torah society, unaffected and uninfected by today's Mitzrayim, what should one's attitude be towards homosexual behavior and homosexual individuals? Homosexual behavior is absolutely prohibited and constitutes an abomination[5]. Discreet, unconditionally halachically committed Jews who do not practice homosexuality but feel same sex attraction (ssa) should be sympathetically and wholeheartedly supported. They can be wonderful Jews, fully deserving of our love, respect, and support. They should be encouraged to seek professional guidance. Moreover, in an uninfected Torah society, appropriate sympathy for discreet shomrei Torah u'mitzvos who experience but do not act upon ssa is clearly distinguished from brazen public identification of their yetzer hara for forbidden behavior. In a pure Torah society people would recognize that every individual neshama is given its own unique constellation of challenges and some of these challenges consist of feeling an impulse to forbidden behavior. But every individual neshama also possesses the resilience and strength to triumph over its challenges[6].
How painful, sad and sobering is the sharp contrast between the clear attitude that should prevail in a pure Torah community and the confusion that exists among well-intentioned individuals within our communities. We are not speaking of the heresy of elements who although identifying themselves as Orthodox demand (sic.) change in the Torah, rachamanah litzlan, a clear violation of the thirteen principles of faith. Instead we are speaking of the confusion caused by today's Mitzrayim within our communities. Due to the influence of today's Mitzrayim, appropriate sympathy in discreet settings has become conflated with public, celebratory identification of people with an urge for forbidden behavior. In today's galus ssa is not viewed as a challenge of kevishas hayetzer (overcoming and taming impulses for forbidden behavior), but rather as a troubling halacha lacking in compassion, rachmanah litzlan.
The influence of today's Mitzrayim on our thinking is sadly and dramatically evident. The light of Torah, however, dispels confusion. Talmud Torah, when honestly and unconditionally pursued, allows us to recognize societally induced pre/misconceptions and biases. Talmud Torah allows us to absorb the divine Weltanschauung. Inevitably, with respect to homosexuality, Talmud Torah will place us at odds with political correctness and the temper of the times. Nevertheless, we must be honest with ourselves, and with Hakadosh Baruch Hu, regardless of political correctness, considerations or consequences.

So I ask the same question: Why do so many Jewish people today accept homosexuality?
Jewish people who defend homosexuality defy G-D, their ancestors, and the Living Torah.
Homosexuality should be condemned and admonished; not excused, accepted, tolerated, celebrated, defended, etc... especially in the midst of political and religious individuals who openly practice the abomination that is against G-D's purpose.

“I am such an expert. Im not.”
What you are is wrong about everything.
Where does God refer to gossip as an abomination? Murder? Theft? False witness?
As far as I have been able to discover, the only crime against God that He hates sufficiently to dub it an abomination is sodomy.
