He turned around, and looked. There, no more than 20 feet away, its feet on a tipped over trash can, was a huge black bear. The bear did not notice him immediately.
But Greg’s dog had come out, and peaked around the corner. It growled and emitted a bark, Grrrr..ru..ruff! The bear jumped over the downed trash can, landed with a Woof!, and charged directly at Greg.

sorry, wrong thread
Here’s another source for this story:
"Greg said: Oh f*ck! The .45 Kimber appeared in his hand and he was firing, ..."
What, like magically appeared?
I supplemented the bull nose rounds for my .45 ACP with rounds that look just like that. The extra expansion wouldn’t keep them from passing through a human body - just make the energy shock greater and the exit hole bigger...
There’s something to be said for Dutch loading. High expansion rounds at the top of the magazine, high penetration rounds further down...
“What, like magically appeared?”
I’ve had a ported pistol but never teleported.
Thanks.
Ok, please correct me if I’m wrong but I thought black bears were herbivores; at least that’s what I was always told about the black bears that live near the coast in SC.
If you had ever had serious training and developed muscle memory in drawing and firing you would understand. Once you perceive a threat it becomes reflex to draw and fire.
In the article, the expert states that he always carries full metal jacket when concerned about bears.
That is not the best advice from my reading on the subject. I am not a bear hunter, but having had a couple of close encounters I have researched the subject and the best bullet regardless of caliber is a hard cast flat nose.
Buffalo Bore recommends hard cast. John Limbaugh, the inventor and builder of the Limbaugh line of high powered revolvers for hunting big game has the same advice.
From one of Limbaugh’s web pages, a list of his favorite loads:

I tried to copy this info but it scrambled so bad as to be unreadable.
Go to the very end of the web page for the info.
I carry hard cast in everything unless I expect to be in large crowds such as a shopping center.
Never did figure out if Davy was three, or the bear was three.
Greg was not cited for shooting the bear. He was cited for reckless endangerment and unlawful discharge of a firearm.I can't imagine a clearer case of self defense. The police seem to resent a mere citizen daring to defend himself in immediate circumstances rather than wait 10-15 minutes for their betters to show up, interrupt the bear's meal (him), shoot the bear, and the man's dog.
The bear would end up dead either way, but they didn't get to shoot him.
Someone must be punished for them not being in on the kill.
And they didn't get to shoot a dog, to (jack)boot.

That doesn’t help you if your name is Herb...
Besides bears are omnivores.
Good question...but you mean the “b’ar”.
If I find my coonskin cap, I may have the answer...
Bingo.
They’re omnivores, and eat anything/ anything.
They are omnivores, but much less of a threat to humans than grizzlies.
