The move to cancel Gauguin could kill off Western culture
NY Post ^ | November 23, 2019 | Steve Cuozzo

At a current Paul Gauguin exhibition at London’s National Gallery, visitors are warned that the famous French painter had sexual relationships with young girls, including two with whom he fathered children.

A wall text notes, “Gauguin undoubtedly exploited his position as a privileged Westerner [in French Polynesia] to make the most of the sexual freedoms available to him.”

An audio guide even raises the question, “Is it time to stop looking at Gauguin altogether?”

This is what art appreciation has come to: a PC prism through which a painting, a work of literature or even a popular song must be scrutinized for racism, sexism, gender bias or just plain hurt feelings.

New York museums haven’t banned anything yet. But look out: Metropolitan Museum of Art director Max Hollein told The New York Times that, “Art cannot solely be perceived in regard to its beauty and craftsmanship. You also have to evaluate it in light of its political messages.”

Kissing his mistress while groping another.

His works are sloppy, juvenile, dark and low brow, imo. Someone else can pay $$$$.

Clinton’s name should be stricken from the history books.

In some countries, if you rape a 12 year old girl, she’s the evil one who lured you so you’re justified killing her.

They are upset over his relationships with “underage” girls. Underage by today’s standards? Underage by the laws of Polynesia at the time? Did Polynesia even HAVE laws about that subject at the time?

The article also doesn’t mention the age of the girls. 16? 13? 9?

In

the article mentions him marrying a Polynesian girl of 13. If this was marriage, then no laws were broken.

The left...had a meltdown over a completely consensual situation with Trump and Stormy Daniels.

...which Trump denies ever happened. The only "evidence" was the payoff for her silence before the election, which doesn't prove that there was an affair--even a false allegation would have damaged Trump's chances (especially after the Bush tape had been made public).

Do we get a warning if a female ‘artist’ had an abortion?

I’m a bit confused. I know nothing of “sexual freedom” in French Polynesia, but what I’m getting at is, was that culture more open about sex, and he was part of that culture? Did he rape or force anyone, I think is the bottom line. If he was involved in consenting relationships, that didn’t violate any laws, that’s very different than use of force.

Maybe more relevant: Did Polynesian girls of that era routinely have sex with other Polynesians at that age? Was Gaugin different in any respect in this regard? If not - then the critics of Gaugin should be calling for the condemnation of the entire Polynesian culture, right?

Regards,

Blacking = Heroic

Bleaching = Terrifying

Who is behind this?

You KNOW.

Exactly. Also, during that time period, it wasn't unheard of in the United States for girls to marry at 12-14. In 1895, , the age of consent for females in four US states was 10 years .

Old true story.....

My Mom, my 6 year old sister..and I went to the L.A. Museum of Art...way back when.

We were walking around...and come into this big room...with "art" all around..My Mom and I stopped...and stared at this painting..of a nude dude doing a headstand..full frontal. About that time my little sister yells out..."Look at the big balls"....

My Mom was mortified...as my little sister raced over to a very large on the floor "modern art" rendition of a rack of billiard balls....

He was extremely wealthy by Polynesian standards, and basically these would have been impressionable young girls dazzled by his wealth and celebrity status.

Groupies, if you will.
He could reach out and (we all know the line)

So no unwillingness and I am not sure about the age of consent laws at the time but.

The man was dying of syphilis.

That was why he ran away to Polynesia in the first place.

He knew what that meant, and of the likelihood that these girls would catch it from him. These girls didn’t really have the education to understand how precarious their position was.
