Cartels Battle Over Mexico’s Multibillion-Dollar Avocado Industry
ktla ^

The cartel members showed up in this verdant stretch of western Mexico armed with automatic weapons and chainsaws.

When locals protested, explaining that the area was protected from logging, they were held at gunpoint and ordered to keep quiet.

The newcomers, members of a criminal group called the Viagras, were almost certainly clearing the forest to set up a grow operation. They wouldn’t be planting marijuana or other crops long favored by Mexican cartels, but something potentially even more profitable: avocados.

From a life of crime to legitimacy? Who would have thought the drug trade was taken over by avocados

They're very healthy and Keto-friendly but I also avoid Mexican produce.

My wife actually got an avocado pit to germinate a few years back. Damn thing got three feet tall, but the cats kept pissing in the pot, and it died.

I never liked avocadoes, anyway. LOL!

In the past twenty years I have only seen an avocado grown in California in Virginia stores one time. Why can’t we buy California avocados?

Because the Goobermint rationed water to the avocado farmers so they could help flushing fresh water out to sea in Sab Fransisco bay to keep the fish happy and the orchard died off.

I guess the environmental protections in Mexico are far superior to those in the US!

LOL

Land became too valuable to grow avocados. Plus the water.

“”They’re very healthy””

Sure are, they’re a staple around here. I live close to the southern border so we have and endless supply of avocados flowing through, I average about one a day. Problem with avocados is the shelf life, some go bad before purchase. One of my poker buddies is a district manager for Walmart here in the Permian Basin. About 30 percent of the avocados they purchase go bad before they can sell, allot of other produce is the same way. It’s allot closer to Mexico from here than California so Mexican avocados are the mainstay.

Had a hog problem on the ranch a couple of years ago and I sent the hands over to Walmart and had them leave a dump trailer at the local Walmart and they filled it up with bad produce. Took it to the ranch and had them dump it in a couple of low area’s we could over look. Hogs love avocados, bananas, tomatoes and about any other veggie they can find. The more rotten they are the better they like it. We got 16 hogs in a five day period before the hogs decided to move on.

Partner, hogs love rotten produce and they will eat that rotten produce until they finish it up. Even the hogs that you are trying to get butchered and to market.

Partner, I used to work part time at HEB to pay for my college tuition and books.

BUILD THE WALL.
We need the Wall to prevent spillover from Mexico. Every household should be armed.
I think Mexico is heading for another civil war or revolution.

Avocados more profitable than marijuana?

That seems hard to believe, even with legalization efforts in the US.

And farming trees takes an appreciable commitment in time, unlike marijuana, where you can move your crop after you’ve poisoned the land by over-fertilization and heavy pesticide application.

OTOH, avocados aren’t illegal—so even if the profit is lower, the risk of confiscation goes away.
