WTVO) — Ann Turner Cook was only 4 months old when she became famous as the original Gerber baby. She turns 93 on Wednesday.
According to the company’s website, Gerber held a contest in 1928 to find a face to represent their baby food.
Many artist submitted oil paintings, but Dorothy Hope Smith, who specialized in children’s portraits and happened to be Cook’s neighbor, submitted a charcoal sketch which was selected.
Cook’s face appeared on Gerber products beginning in 1928 and became the official trademark in 1931.
Cook became an English teacher for the majority of her life, according to WLS.

So very dear.
I worked at the Republican Headquarters in Kent County Michigan 234234 years ago. Gerry Jerry Ford was out congressman and he came into the office frequently. Dan Gerber was the titular head of the Michigan Repub party back then. I was very very good at forging his signature on letters we sent out to possible contributors.
If I’d been even slightly larcenous....well, you can imagine.
So....., being spoon-fed baby food, again?
God bless her. I heard she was given a life time supply of baby food when she did that ad and has just started eating it again.

A family of missionaries went to live in this primitive village to convert the villagers to Christ. The villagers saw themselves as sociologists every bit as much as the missionaries did and they became particularly fascinated about how the wife prepared their meals.
The villagers would cram into the kitchen when food was being prepared and they soon developed their own theory and were very proud of themselves to have their theory confirmed. If, for example, the wife opened a can of beans, they could tell what it was by the photo on the can. A can of corn had a picture of corn. A box of cereal had a picture of cereal.
The tribesmen were delighted to find their theory was consistently true until one day they followed the wife into the kitchen as usual then dashed out of the home in stark terror. The wife had just opened a jar of Gerber’s baby food for their infant.

In our 40 year auction business, in settling estates and selling out households, we often found framed photos of that Gerber Baby. We also found many photos of the Dionne Quintuplets, and the “Campbells Kids”.
I found one in a thrift store. It’s old but not very valuable. I have it hanging in my “children’s” bedroom in my Victorian cottage retreat.
Cute! In our family, it was Chessie, the B&O cat, asleep on a pillow.
BTW, I have a lot of original Campbell Kids paper dolls from my grandmom's house, although they were cut out and played with in the 1920s. Are they worth anything?
