In my overly long post I mentioned that one of the two mistakes our would-be rulers made was failing to lock down the internet when it first appeared on the scene. The second major mistake they made was failing to get our guns.
Their high point in their quest to take our guns was the Assault Weapons Ban back in 1994. That was supposed to have been followed up by an insurance mandate* on the grandfathered weapons, but Slick Willy's zipper problems took away too much of his political capital and the insurance mandate never saw the light of day.
And then the internet started hitting its stride and information was shared among freedom loving Americans (BIG hat tip to
John Lott) and they've been trying to recoup their lost ground ever since.

Interesting point about the weapons ban efforts and Clinton.
Do you suppose there were patriots at work back then who exposed (no pun intended) Slick Willy in order to prevent a 2A disaster? It would mean that the patriot plan was already in motion in the 90s. I wouldn’t rule that out.
