Google is about to take a big step into the video game market with a service that some have likened to a Netflix (NFLX) for games.
On Tuesday, Google (GOOGL) will officially launch Stadia, a service for streaming and playing games without needing to own a hard copy or even a console. At launch, the service will support a lackluster lineup of a dozen games with more already in the works and a reasonable price tag.
Google will be competing with a daunting list of rivals in the industry who are betting the future of video games lies in the cloud rather than just physical hardware. Microsoft (MSFT) is currently testing its Project xCloud service and Amazon is rumored to be working on its own cloud gaming service. Sony recently slashed prices on its cloud gaming service, Playstation Now, ahead of Stadia's launch.

Millenials and after are licking their chops at the move towards eliminating physical ownership of not only electronics, but just about anything. To Millenials, owning physical media is nothing more than a burden...owning anything is a burden to them and the planet.
Game companies have been working towards this for a decade or more, because they do not want you owning their game that lets you transfer it from person to person. They don’t get any profit from used game sales after all, and their main argument is that while you own the plastic cartridge or disc, you don’t own the Intellectual Property contained within. So to game companies, it’s like a loophole that you ‘own’ the game when you have the physical copy.
Millennials think that physical media is a burden the planet and that streaming is awesomeballs for the planet but the server farms are a bigger ecological impact on the planet than listening to a record or CD at home “forever”.
They aren’t even downloading content and playing it back locally on their drive.
And if you keep things these days that is “hoarding” and they seek to shame personal property.
And yes, Big Media likes the end of secondary sale of merchandise.
Phony charts. Put an asterisk by the “top acts”.
If they can get you to buy a subscription, they can keep you paying month to month year to year to play a game and if it incorporates chat features, profiles, etc, you have a personal identity and network of friends connected to that subscription. Stop paying and you lose those friends.
another venue for capturing you as a commondity - your data - to be bartered and sold to the highest bidders
Games are a bit late in the content shifting away from hard media (books, music, movies) because they are highly interactive. But the outcome is inevitable.
Streaming gaming sucks for most games I prefer. Maybe for point and click games it works but not AAA action games. Unless you live next to the server farm.
I was thinking the same.
“Games are a bit late in the content shifting away from hard media (books, music, movies) because they are highly interactive. But the outcome is inevitable”
Mostly because the bandwidth hasn’t been there. Its taken awhile for digital sales to be convincing enough for the shift as well. I think with the other media the convenience factor overwhelmed the desire to own the physical thing, plus it didn’t take near the bandwidth.
Console gamers and PC gamers are two different animals as well. PC gamers have took it on the chin with oppressive DRM for years, and console gamers let their voices be heard on this issue, which contributed too extended physical game availability. However, the console game disc has become practically worthless now as it is little more than a key anyway. A music CD ironically has more actual ownership value than a modern video game.
The problem an all online gaming model like this has is lag.
Google has solved that. They know your name, contacts, friends, where you are, what you are doing, where you will be going, what you like and dislike, your medical conditions and on and on. Lag is no bother, they already know where you were going to move.
I play games, but I won’t be buying a Stadia.
No g00gle.
It’s PC for me, and ps4 pro until ps5 comes out.
Ditto.
I just hope Google doesn’t buy Steam.
In America the cloud was called the mainframe. Religious wars were waged to distribute the computer power to the desk top. The cycle back and forth seems to take about 30 years.
