Former heavyweight champion Sonny Liston is perhaps best known as the man sprawled across the canvas and looking upwards at Muhammad Ali in one of the most celebrated moments in boxing history.
The immortalized photographs were taken at a small gymnasium in Lewiston, Maine, where Liston's rematch with Ali was famously held after being moved from Boston Garden amid fears of organized crime a presence throughout most of Liston's life.

I’ve read that that fight was a mob fix. Don’t know if it’s true but...

Was it Liston who put Ben-Gay on his glove and it got into Clay’s eyes?

My uncle had tickets to that fight, was delayed in traffic, and by the time he got there, it was over.

I still don’t believe that short right by Clay knocked out Liston.

I remember that fight, and they thought that Liston took a dive.
Slow Motion Video later revealed Clay hit him so quick the naked eye couldn’t see it. Although the Slow Mo may have been doctored and Sonny took a dive after all.

Liston's final fight was in New Jersey against Chuck Wepner, who would go on to become the real-life inspiration for Sylvester Stallone's 'Rocky.'Wepner wasn't inspiration for anything other than bleeding and a massacred face. They always called him the Bleeder.

Liston took a dive. Yes he did, but don't say it out loud here. 😀

I remember Wepner. Largely a punching bag with a proclivity towards spilling lots of bright red krovvy from his face...
I guess a man’s gotta make a living!

Liston took a dive.Agreed. What convinces me is Liston's behavior during the count. I've never seen a stunned fighter react in such a way - the fakery was obvious.

I do. Watched it many, many times. Clay/Ali was one of the fastest, most powerful boxers in history.

Muhammad Ali invented trash talking and caused an entire generation of you black men to explore Islam. There has been few greater agents of Satan in the USA

Ali was quick, elusive, smart. Not as powerful as Liston or Tyson, but a better fighter overall.

Obviously an opinion, but I would take Tyson over Ali in their primes.
