Not certain why the Chinese would be involved in this at all, they have no ability to fly private airplanes. They are not allowed to fly from one airport to the next.

I know an American that goes over to China to do airshows. They make him disassemble the airplanes and transport them to the next airport, no flying across the country permit or not.

Instead of the Yugo, it’ll be called the ‘Yugone’.

they’ve been promising me flying cars for at least 50 years now, and it’s the damn Slovaks who are getting them first!

Actually it looks like the Chinese.

“Because people who can’t maneuver in two dimensions are going to do so well with three.”

Exactly correct you are.

I personally have no problem with flying cars if manned by a qualified pilot. It then becomes just an airplane and the rules of the air by the FAA will be guidance.

I have no problem with a flying car if on autonomous guidance and at that point the dude in the car is just a passenger. Our technology is not their yet but it will soon be.

Just imagine 10 thousand executives trying to get to work in Houston in a flying car under their control at 730 in the morning. It would not be good. It would be mayhem. Then throw in Houston low ceilings and occasional fog down to almost ground level.

The flying car must be autonomous and capable of IFR transit in airspace and landings in such. It would also be most necessary to be under control of Air Traffic Control even if autonomous. In effect you would just be a passenger in which your ride will be controlled by ATC. This might happen in the future and is technologically feasible today. It is all about how much it will cost.

Forgot to add this. If one is in an autonomous flying vehicle one should also be capable of flying the damn thing if a system failure occurs.

737 Max is case in point. The same failure that led to two tragic crashes in the third world did not happen in the Americas nor Europe though they had the same failures.

It did not happen due to superior pilots and standards of maintenance and training.

You both seem to forget that we live in a world were every computer system on the planet can be hacked.

The computer fly by wire systems on every passenger airliner is at risk. It has been proven that the navigation systems can be hacked by someone on the plane.

Just imagine the city Your major hub ATC for car-planes being hacked by a terrorist and causing every car-plane to dive in to the ground at the same time.

Just think of the LOJACK system that can turn off the engine of a car that has been stolen. Suppose a hacker decides to cut the engine every car-plane in a city at the same time.

Such cars would be owned and operated by the wealthy at least for a decade or so. This would be an almost irresistible challenge for many terrorist organizations to hack in and kill a lot of rich westerners.

The first hacker caused mass murder is only a matter of time. This could be it if it takes off. (Pun intended)

That is the problem with such a contraption. It could work in a technical sense, but only with lots of automation in the flying mode and limited ground travel. That would limit it to little more than point to point travel as a type of helicopter.

Even then, special landing and garage facilities would also be needed to permit a number of them to land in a city as a type of VIP transport and high-end commuter vehicle. Unfortunately, that brings greater operating expense and a limited market -- which works against the economic and business case.

The front end of the pictured plane is too low to the ground. A smash landing waiting to happen.

Scaramanga had a cooler set of wheels that flew in the movie.

My uncle was Leland Dewey Bryan. He was killed when his flying car crashed at the Oshkosh Air Show.

Not as creepy as a flying 1973 AMC Hornet.

How do I see this evolving? Initially operating in controlled space above designated divided highways - a congestion buster. Like all such major changes, it will be acquired by wealthier folk in the early waves, until design changes improve the abilities of, and competition in such vehicles.
