Food is too tasty now [not satire]

Scientists from the University Of Kansas have recently published research in the journal Obesity that attempts to define those foods under the term “hyper-palatability.” While hyper-palatability has been used for years in relation to foods, this paper is the first to provide a concrete definition.

The researchers found that combinations of certain types of ingredients create hyper-palatability: combinations of fat and sodium (hot dogs, bacon); combinations of fat and simple sugars (cake, ice cream, brownies); and combinations of carbohydrates and sodium (pretzels, popcorn). Researchers assigned quantitative values to those ingredients, then analyzed 7,757 food items in the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrient Database for Dietary Studies. Their findings: 62% of foods in the database met the definition of hyper-palatability, including 49% of all items labeled as “low/reduced/no sugar, fat, sodium, and/or sugar.” That’s right: Half of the seemingly better-for-you foods out there are still designed to make us overeat.

Lead researcher Tera Fazzino says the definition of hyper-palatability could change the way we approach nutrition and diets. Rather than cutting out all desserts or all chips, for example, consumers might only need to avoid those that meet the nutritional definition of hyper-palatability

In sum,he says people are addicted to fat, sugar, and salt. So?

He even says the big food giants are the way they are, because they are giving the consumers what they want. So?

He does not offer a solution, only have the government regulate every ones diet. Doesn't work, can't work, unless you go full Venezuela.

Why do you think a government bent on solving obesity or addition to food, would work any better than the current war on drugs?

It is easy enough to make unhealthy food at home, and to have plenty of it available to eat unhealthy diets.

The fact that he was given a Pulizer should be a big tip-off he is a big government control pusher.

Get back to me when you can show people do not want high fat, high salt, high sugar food.

Giving people what they want is not a conspiracy against health.

Huh? In the 60s and 70s, cokes came in 16 oz cans and glass bottles as large as 20 oz.

Yes, too many people these days rely on high fat, high calorie and high carb restaurant/fast food. Too many don’t know how to cook anything outside a microwave.

I cook from scratch at home and very rarely eat out. I hate wasting time getting dressed to go out, wasting more time waiting for my dinner, being very disappointed in the meal, having to put up with surly waitstaff and required undeserved tip, getting the bill that’s 10 times more than making it at home and then wasting more time and gas driving back home. No thanks. I grocery shop every 4-6 weeks (yes, many fresh produce can last that long - that spaghetti squash from above) and have inexpensive tasty meals that usually take less than 30 minutes hands on and cost just $5/day.

“would direct me to the Campbell’s brand”.
If your cardiologist wants to increase your salt intake he would probably direct you to the Campbell’s brand also.

Yup. As an adult, I tried the salt free low sodium version - tasted like dirty dishwater. Terrible.

My first thought on reading the title was elk was just as tasty back then as it is now. I had just finished my elk sandwich for lunch.

There is a guy on youtube.
Forgot his name, but he runs tests on himself to see the blood sugar impact.

He tested Ezekiel bread because it was claiming a low glycemic index, and it bumped his blood sugar up almost like white bread.
He says the total carbs less carbs from dietary fiber is the best way to determine impact on blood sugar.

Although I did recently see him test an Atkins bar vs a Glucerna bar vs a snickers. And the Glucerna which claimedto have slow release carbs behaved a lot like the Atkins.

You’re going to see a lot of companies trying to cash in on the Keto boom, knowing that there will be a lot of suckers that will buy anything saying “Keto Friendly” on it.

Always read the labels!

Dunno. Guess when the kids crash after their sugar/carb high, they don’t cause problems to their afternoon teachers. They have free for all pancakes and syrup for breakfast.

Yikes! You just don’t have a clue. Of course people want high fat, high salt, and high sugar foods. The body was built to crave them for a very good reason. That’s the problem. Without a winter ketosis season, and a difficult hunter and gathering lifestyle, the constant and total consumption of processed foods with the quantities of such crap is absolute disaster. Add super processing destroying nutrients, pesticides, and artificial additives and you have basically human Chernobyl. Damn, go to Walmart and look. Hell, go to your nearest 6th grade and look. Are you that fat or just fat headed that you don’t see the obesity pandemic beginning in childhood?

There isn’t a conspiracy. Obesity pays big bucks. The government loves it. Farmers love it. Processors love it. The point at which marginal costs equals marginal revenue for profit maximization.

Methinks this is above your pay grade so I’ll leave you with an oldie, “no one is getting fat except mama Cass. Peace out.
