Steve Scalise Says Law Required Trump To Ask Ukrainian President About Corruption
Townhall ^ | 11/3/2019 | Bronson Stocking

House Minority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La) told ABC's "This Week" host George Stephanopoulos that Trump had a legal requirement to ensure that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was rooting out corruption before Trump could legally send foreign aid to Ukraine. Rep. Scalise said the National Defense Authorization Act passed last year requires the president to certify a country is rooting out corruption before the president can send taxpayer money to that country.

"Well, first of all on that call [President Trump] was not talking about the 2020 election or political opponents, he was talking about corruption relating to the 2016 elections. By the way, when Russia tried to interfere, George, when Russia tried to interfere with our election, it was Barack Obama who was president, not Donald Trump. President Trump has a legal requirement to ensure that the country given foreign aid, in this case Ukraine, is taking steps to root out corruption. And he and President Zelensky talked about that. Zelensky, in fact, was asked, did he think it was inappropriate, was there pressure put on him, and President Zelensky said he wasn't pressured. And he got the money ultimately. He got the money."

Rep. Scalise says Trump's conversation with Ukrainian President Zelensky was not about Trump's 2020 political rivals, but about the past actions of former Vice President Joe Biden. Biden has admitted to pressuring the Ukrainian government into firing a prosecutor that was investigating Burisma, a company that Hunter Biden, Joe Biden's son, served as board member. Hunter Biden lacked the experience for the board position, but nevertheless drew a monthly salary of $50,000 or more. Rep. Scalise says it was these actions of former Vice President Joe Biden that Trump had a legal obligation to discuss with Zelensky.

"It wasn't about the 2020 election, it was about what had happened prior in 2016, corruption in Ukraine. And again, the law requires the President to certify that a country before they get foreign aid is actually taking steps to root out corruption. [Speaker Pelosi] voted for that. [Chairman Adam Schiff] voted for that. I would imagine Eliot Engel voted for that. But at the end of the day, the President was talking to Zelensky about rooting out corruption. And Zelensky himself said there was nothing wrong with the call. He wasn't pressured. And he got the money. He actually got the taxpayer money."

Seems like President Trump would’ve pointed this out from the get-go. Maybe he just wanted to see how low the demonicRATS would go.

They don’t care. The Rats are mostly sociopathic scum so any narrative, true or false, which satisfies their ends will do. If not Ukraine, something else will come up.

This did not come to light in any fake “impeachment hearing”. It would in a real one, however. That’s why Dems don’t want a real one.

If you follow the Dims’ warped “logic”, anyone who commits a crime, but is running for the Presidency, cannot be investigated for that crime as long as he/she remains a candidate.

This makes no sense and the President needs to go on TV and point it out.

“This makes no sense and the President needs to go on TV and point it out.”

****************

The gutless senate Republicans should be doing this for him. They passed last year’s NDAA by an 87-10 vote. The House overwhelmingly passed the same bill.

Time for the GOP to stand up for this president and condemn this fake impeachment.

Finally a Republican is saying this. From the beginning the Republicans should have done what the Rats would do. Call a press conference with a dozen Republicans pointing out that Trump is actually doing what the Law says he should be doing, it would have cut the rats off the knees from the start.

It seems very clear with the timing of Joe Biden’s actions. It was all an effort to Help Hunter collect cash which is actually a payoff from US aid dollars aka tax dollars. So it seems to me that it was President Trumps sworn duty to ask about Biden the Criminal not poor old Joe the Candidate.
And just like that the Son Of A Bitch was fired!

When this first started Trump said, "go ahead, you're going to look like fools".

I figure he knows that the law requires him to ask for assistance.

You have to figure it this way. Better they go down this rabbit hole and run full speed into a concrete wall they themselves built than have democrats mucking around on complex issues that can't be so easily countered.

Trump's defense is as easy as "All I did was obey the law and you democrats want to impeach me for obeying the law?", but by having this joke reach the Senate, Republicans can subpoena and grill a whole herd of people they otherwise probably can't.

The whole Shiff game is to try and muddy the water and keep anything from being that clear. Shiff is so damned stupid he's going down this road, let him do it rather than mucking around on something complex.

IIRC, Biden voted for it. Maybe the GOP is waiting for this to get real before springing it on the Democrats. We’ll see how they spin going after President Trump for following a law they passed, if indeed he even did any of this.

That's the way I figured it, too. They're holding it. It's an ace. I'm certain they have 3 more.

The second one has to be that Ukraine got the aid.

Quid pro quo would be....you do this and THEN we will release the money.

But go back to the transcript. Zelensky actually asks the President to send him more information about those 2016 events.

DEFENSE. DEFENSE. DEFENSE.

Go on offense, Steve. If it’s not in your playbook, it’s in theirs. You should know.
