This puzzle came quickly, as fast as I could write the correct letters down. I write the puzzle out on paper, then write the correct letters underneath, so I don’t know how to time it. Oftentimes, I don’t even look for more than phrases and short words to guide me, so I have no clue what the saying is until I’m done. Is that normal?

Did not get the “big stick’ hint until I finished with the help of hal’s tool, my first crack at it. never heard the saying, so no jump start for me.
