The NCAA's Board of Governors voted unanimously Tuesday to permit college athletes the opportunity to benefit from the use of their names, images and likenesses "in a manner consistent with the collegiate model," the organization announced.
“We must embrace change to provide the best possible experience for college athletes,” board chair Michael V. Drake, president of Ohio State University, said in a statement. “Additional flexibility in this area can and must continue to support college sports as a part of higher education.
Clemson Alumni:> $20,000
Georgia Fan:> $30,000
What could go wrong???
That is exactly what will happen. It'll be a bidding war by boosters under the guise of "endorsements". No workable way to prevent that.
Almost any of the college players who are good enough to make some money off their skill sets and name are already making money under the table for helping fix the point spread.

If a school wants their money to be paid back, they can make that a condition of the scholarship. However, a competing school may not demand to be paid back.
Let it be a free market.
What about a five figure education? What about a $1000 grant? How much does a college have to give in order to gain absolute control over the monetization of a student's name and likeness?
Then put the money above the table.
Why are you opposed to people being able to sell a product at a price that they’re offered? I thought this was a pro-capitalism site.
The cash and favors they get for the point spread will never be "above the table".
If they were gamblers would shy away from games where some player received above the table cash shortly before a game which would just be another way to alter the odds whether the player was in on the fix or not.
And that’s what it should be, a farm system for the pros!
Its been functionally that for 50 years or more. The professional football & basketball leagues ought to be required to pick up some to all of the cost to .. and I use the term loosely ... the educational institutions! Le the colleges lease their name to teams so they can get a revenue stream. It ends the charade of the “big-university” student-athlete. Puts some honesty back into the situation. Real colleges athletics at least for football & basketball only exists at the small college level. I know several who played at that level, parlayed it into an education and went on to be professional in everything from medicine, law, business to science/engineering.
Right on. I quit watching it many years ago. With all the gambling, cheating and scandals they might as well take them out of colleges and make them self supporting NFL farm teams.
They should become like the Soccer Clubs in Europe. Basically academies that develop young talent.
Next shoe to fall for colleges & universities will widespread unionization for graduate students. Its already happening slowly. This will accelerate it.

Colleges do not provide anything close to an education for a good many of their current - er - students.
But “education” for a jock?
Yes, a very very few do get a great education, but get serious, most of those jokesters on the NCAA side can only write an X where their name should go.
And that’s AFTER they get their (ptui-ptui) boxtop degree.
College football has long been a black affirmative action/high end welfare program, as well as just a reservoir for pro teams.
College football has been paying star players since before any of us were born. It’s always been that way and always will be.
Schools will lose revenue, so there goes wimmens sports. A battle royale is in the works if the NCAA takes another whack at mens sports to finance the wimmenfolk.
Ha! Lawsuits and unionization of “student” athletes incoming. This is being pushed by the left for a reason.

It’s about time. These top colleges are making hundreds of millions of dollars in sports and the NCAA and conferences combined are making about a billion dollars and more off tv rights. It’s not amateur sports when college coaches are making millions of dollars and can get up and leave for another school and raked in more millions of dollars. All that I just said above are free market moves by these institutions and universities but the students are there to be ‘amateur student athletes’ .....foolishness. I don’t care if the kid is black, white, Asian, Hispanic boy or girl.....if the university can make money off their jersey and live in plush surroundings then the kid actually doing the work should be able to profit. Now will there be problems with this new system in place? Sure but there’s already problems with the under the table buying players right now. At least it’s brought out to light instead of under the table means
Why? People in on academic scholarships are allowed to make money outside the college. What’s wrong with athletes doing the same?
