The NCAA's Board of Governors voted unanimously Tuesday to permit college athletes the opportunity to benefit from the use of their names, images and likenesses "in a manner consistent with the collegiate model," the organization announced.

“We must embrace change to provide the best possible experience for college athletes,” board chair Michael V. Drake, president of Ohio State University, said in a statement. “Additional flexibility in this area can and must continue to support college sports as a part of higher education.

Great news.

Let these kids make money off their skill sets and their own name.

College football is over. It is now nothing more than a farm system for the pro’s. There is no longer any reason for the colleges to be involved other than to pay for womens sports.

Sure as long as they pay back the scholarship money. Nobody would know who they are if they weren’t in the high profile world of college sports.

And kneeling against America.

College football players currently worry about losing scholarship $$.

This way, our domestic enemies can recruit from the colleges.

Next: High schools!

What do you call a free six-figure education?

Colleges are not about education; they are about making money.

I laugh at anyone who claims there are non-profit colleges and bemoans for-profit colleges as ALL colleges are for-profit.

No real problem with it, but is there a line? Can a HS footballer be promoted by a company with the intent for a better draft position? Can Lebron’s kid be paid for commercial endorsements? Can these athletes get paid for political endorsements?

Alabama and Clemson are deeply saddened. No longer by graft and cheating can they lure 5 star jugheads to their sweaty armpit towns to play for the aggrandizement of rich boosters. The kids can make their own dough.

” pay back the scholarship money. “

Let us be good left wing socialists and have them put 90% of their earnings go to pay for others. After all they will be well paid working in the school’s time.

They’ll just have to up the ante and offer salaries.

This can change the tax status of a “non-profit” college if they pay salaries to entertainers.

First, it ain't "free." College athletes work hard and risk permanent injury. Second, the colleges are still getting their services to play games, and the colleges are keeping that TV and gate revenue. What this rule change does is allow the students to have control over the sale of their names and images. Colleges shouldn't be able to, say, license a student's name and image to a video game and not give the student any say or a share of the revenue.

But going back to your point, should colleges be able to sell the name and likeness of any student getting scholarship money? What about the kid getting a piddly $1000 grant? Does he lose control of his name and likeness? What's the cutoff?

College football has long been a black affirmative action/high end welfare program, as well as just a reservoir for pro teams. I haven’t watched it in years. It is a complete sham.

Alabama alumni:> “hey there 5 star QB recruit. I’d like to buy a autographed jersey of yours. $10,000”.

Clemson Alumni:> $20,000

Georgia Fan:> $30,000

What could go wrong???

The student wouldn’t have a market for his mug and name if not for his place on the team.

Seems to me a six figure education at no charge to the student is equitable reimbursement.

If the athletes don’t like it, don’t play.

The schools will still own all rights to trademarked logos, live action photos, etc. The players will have to negotiate use of their image wearing, say, a team jersey. Or the jersey itself with player’s name and number on it. Welcome to the adult world, athletes.

There will be plenty of abuses reminiscent of the old $100 handshake or no-show jobs for athletes.

Schools will lose revenue, so there goes wimmens sports. A battle royale is in the works if the NCAA takes another whack at mens sports to finance the wimmenfolk.
