I think this week could be the end of our outdoor gardens.
Just peppers remain today.

Good morning Diana - thank you for the ping.

With heavy rain tomorrow and the shortening days, today may be my last good day for yard work.

Peppers are really the only thing still producing, so they are OK up to a real hard frost.
Last good day to plant garlic - that that has to go in.
Sweet potatoes are dying back, but they can stay in the ground up to the dreaded "hard frost".
Today the wood stove flue gets taken apart and cleaned out - maybe split a little wood.

But first I've got this hot pot of coffee to get down. All things in their time.

Wednesday & Thursday were, 'Pumpkin-O-Rama Days' around here. Beau brought up some Sugar Pie pumpkins from the lower garden for me, so I cooked down the meat and roasted the seeds, and also made a batch of Pumpkin Butter from scratch. I still have 20 or so pumpkins to go, but a friend is taking some of them off my hands. D@mn my Green Thumb; it makes a lot of work for me. I haven't even started on the Butternut Squash, yet! And there's still Kale to eat. There always seems to be Kale to eat...even on years I don't plant Kale!

Moved two Rosemary plants indoors as it's getting really cold at night, already. Grrr! I can usually keep them happy for a few months in a south-facing window. One trick I learned? Buy your Rosemary Plants in the Produce area of your grocery store - bigger plants for less money than in the Garden Center. These two came from Walmart.

Thank you Diana for the thread and ping. Guess I could put myself in the newbie area who really appreciates all the wonderful posts on here. For years I thought I was just a bad gardener. But this fall I found all the raccoons and opossums that was recently removed from my home crawl space under the house was certainly a contributing factor. I am excited that I may actually be able to plant something next year and have it produce something for myself too. And also won't have to awaken to raccoons in my bedroom any more. Thank you all for all the postings. I love this thread!

My problem in the past was BATS in the house. I had an old farmhouse with a leaky attic that was Bat Heaven. It took many thousands of dollars to be rid of them and get the attic cleaned up and sanitized so I could sell the house!

LOL! My Black Hills Spruce are filled to the brim with them too, this season. One tree in particular is loaded.

We have had a very wet season, so I’m attributing ample cone production to that - the trees are otherwise very healthy. In a drought year, the trees think they might die, so again, they produce a ton of cones, trying to leave seeds behind for future generations.

Because trees are just that smart, I guess! Or maybe...

I’ll be back after the UW Badger football game v. Ohio State. BIG game, today!

I’m also going to make a triple batch of Creamy Pumpkin Sauce to use up the pumpkin puree I still have, and to freeze for later. Pumpkin is not recommended for canning. You need professional measures and higher heat than you can obtain with home canning. (That’s the latest I’ve heard, anyway!)

Don't know about the pinecones but we have a heavier than normal acorns on the ground - they are everywhere. (west Michigan)

No more garden although the Egyptian walking onions are coming up like crazy from the seed heads from his year, they are over a foot tall. Indoor gardening - growing alfalfa sprouts - that's about it.

Diana - nice looking pumpkins. I made butternut bisque soup yesterday - yummy yummy. Also just picked up 6 nice cabbage heads - it's kapusta time, will be shredding tomorrow after church.

Bats, nice to see but not to live with. The expense of removing pests is way too crazy, totally agree. I actually felt bad having my raccoons relocated. I am such a sap for animals. And super hate parting with money. But as you know, for many reasons like destruction, disease, and and danger to pets, children, and gardens(laf), we cannot share space with them. Very glad we got them out. Even though my bank account didn't like it a bit.

Good Saturday! Today we are popping in some daffodil and crocus bulbs before it gets too cold to work outside easily. We found auger drill bits that make it much easier than digging holes.

Our gardens have been put to bed for winter already.

When do the seed catalogues come out?
