Windows 10 is now comfortably the most used OS in the world
The Inquirer ^ | 10/25/2019 | Chris Merriman

MICROSOFT HAS HAD A MIXED MONTH in terms of market share, as we dive into the murky world of Netmarketshare's figures for September.

Windows 10 is the big winner (as you'd hope). In terms of desktop/laptop users, it's now comfortably over the halfway line, with 52.38 per cent of the market (+1.39).

With less than four months until it reaches end of life, Windows 7 still remains a major force, though it continues to drop. It now stands at 28.17 (-2.17).

Lesser versions of Windows continue to chug along - Windows 8.x now stands at 4.1 per cent (-0.73) of which a mere 0.62 (-0.07) are on the older Windows 8.

In total, macOS now takes up 10.73 (+1.71) per cent of the market, of which the vast majority, 7.15 (+1.2) are using macOS 10.14. Versions 10.11-10.13 stand at 0.62, 0.94 and 2.02 respectively.

Linux continues to slowly slide. It's now down to 1.25 (-0.01).

Let's cast the net wider and look at the way operating systems split amongst all form factors. Remember, this will include items like maker boards and games consoles. It's good for Microsoft here too with Windows 10 being the biggest single operating system in the world at 22.4 per cent.

But when you look at the bigger picture, Google's Android remains the most used operating system in the world, with 39.12 per cent. However, Windows is closing fast at 36.28. iOS is in third place with 18.46, followed by macOS at 4.87.

Linux is fifth (0.78), Chrome OS is in seventh place (0.17) and Series 40/Symbian is at 0.02 per cent. We merely mention it because Windows Phone OS is on 0.01. Yes. More people use Series 40 than Windows Phone.

All told then, Google has the biggest share in the world - 39.29. Microsoft holds 36.29, with Apple holding 23.33.

In those terms, it shows that there really isn't a single vendor in command anymore. The splits that fascinate us are the result of fragmentation between OS versions, particularly in Android, and the marketing of two different operating systems as both Apple and Android are doing.

Windows 10 went to crap once an Indian CEO was hired and most of the developers are now unqualified, incompetent H1B Indians. Only use Windows 10 when I’m forced.

I’m sticking to Windows 95.

I kept around an old machine that ran Windows 98 because I really enjoyed some of the old programs. Unfortunately the media playback technology became so ancient that it no longer became viable for anything except software of that vintage. Plus the machine took forever to boot up, sort of like waiting for the picture tube to come on back in the 50s and 60s. Windows 7 will someday be a dinosaur but I'm not sure the technology is going to progress much further than it already has.

This ‘number one’ listing only exists, because the morons at apple set their prices too high!!

You don't understand. Apple is overpriced because it wants to attract all the snobs who *want* to overspend on their computers. Apple is to Lexus what Microsoft is to Toyota. The Toyota takes you wherever you want to drive but the Lexus has a few extra gadgets and makes the owner appear to have "made it".

Apple doesn't *want* to be the computer for the masses any more than Rolls Royce wants to be the car for the common man.

Is the Classic Shell part of the Windows 10 system, or do you have to download it from the internet?

It’s an add-on you download from the internet.

I don’t use it but your question got me curious.

Here’s a link that discusses different ways to make W10 look and feel like W7:

[[After January 14, 2020, Microsoft will no longer provide security updates or support for PCs running Windows 7.]]

That’s ok- still stickin with 7 because that’s when everything gets run in a sandbox - or run rollbackRX, and very likely it will be many years before anything terrible happens- if it does- delete sandbox session, or do a rollback-

Don't matter. There are ways to keep Windows 7 secure.

I like Windows 7 much,much,*much* better than Windows 10.

Install Open Shell and it will be much like W.7 but better.

W.10ClassicShell

Esp. if you tweak it:

The list of Winaero Tweaker features

Add to this the complete list of over 200 tweaks available in in Ultimate Windows Tweaker 4 for Windows 10

GeekMode

There are plenty of unobtrusive error events which you would not know are happening unless you ran event viewer (Run eventvwr.msc and hit Administrative events), which i am sure occurs under other systems as well.

“don’t worry that it hasn’t been developed since 2017”

Oh, I’d never worry about that! I’m a female curmudgeon (is that possible?), and it seems to me that the more recent something is introduced, the worse it is. I’ll keep the link you sent for the time when I MUST transition to Win. 10. Thank you!
