The Coast Guard is searching for a 26-year-old man who was reported overboard from a Carnival cruise ship Thursday evening.
The Carnival Dream departed Galveston, Texas, Thursday on a four-day cruise when the guest went overboard, Carnival said in a statement to CNN.
"Based on camera footage, it appears the guest jumped from his stateroom balcony," the statement said. Command on the ship began search and rescue procedures immediately.
A report came into the Coast Guard around 8:45 p.m. at night, when the ship was about 47 miles southeast of Galveston, the Coast Guard said. An urgent marine information broadcast was issued, and a helicopter crew and aircrew were deployed.

That’s a lotta money from the American taxpayer to find his ass. I say let the sharks have him.
What impact does it have on the cruise?
I've never been on one when someone jumped, but I always figured the ship alerts the coast guard and keeps going. I'd guess the passengers aren't even told.
I suppose, if the ship finds out soon enough, they might send out a small boat to look around.
Clapper and Brennan holding hands and going overboard?
I think you’re right.
When we were in line, a woman dropped dead practically in the entrance to Disney’s Spaceship Earth. The Disney folk acted like they were working on her and after a while carted her off on a stretcher on the back of one of their golf cart vehicles. She was long dead but they wouldn’t admit it because they didn’t want it to damper the mood.
This idiot who jumped off the boat, sorry, no sympathy.
Yep, that would do it. I should have read more carefully.
He hit the water with a splat and broke many bones then got suck under the ship then thru the propellers. He is fish food.

They may have run over him..... again : )
I was on a Carnival cruise about 20 years ago. On the TV there was a live view of the entire side of the ship. I figured they had a monitor on the bridge in case someone went over the side.
IMO, if someone did go over, they were a goner as either the ships propellers turned them into chum, the fall knocked them out and they drowned ASAP or if they survived, NO ONE would find them. (Every night I had a cigar on the balcony, and if you saw any ship's lights, they were MILES away. Usually it was just BLACK.)
[sidebar] There was an episode of "Tales of the Unexpected" where Jack Weston jumped over the side of a cruise ship in broad daylight in order to collect on an ETA bet, only no one saw him go. Last scene was at sea level with him yelling for help as the ship sailed on. I always think of that one when I read articles like this.

They instituted a square search, which is what you do.
I knew a guy who was fishing out of Columbia SC. he was
in the cabin putting rigs together while his friend
was topside. He came on deck and found he was alone.
He started a square search and found his mate two hours
later, treading water. I love being on the ocean but
it is a wilderness and a mistake will cost you your life.
If it had been those two, they would have needed some persuasion...
How many do you lose on a regular cruise? 15? 20?
It’s in my book “Astonishing Tales of the Sea”.
