In what officials are calling a bizarre incident, an Arkansas hunter was killed by a deer that he thought he had shot dead...Thomas Alexander, age 66, who lived in the area and was an experienced hunter, was sitting in an elevated deer stand during the state's muzzleloader season..."It appears he shot the deer and he had put his rifle down near the deer stand and walked down to check and make sure it was dead..."

My favorite deer reference in Marissa Tormei in “My cousin Vinny”.

“You goin to shoot a deer?”
“ A sweet innocent leaf eatin doe eye deer? Imagine you are a deer, Ya prancin along, get thirsty, ya spot a little brook, ya put your little deer lips down to the cool clear water, BAM a f’ing bullet rips off part of your head....

Re: 200 lbs ain’t no slender deer

I'm just guessing, and I don't know the breed of the deer.

I got chased by a doe with two fawns a couple years ago early in the morning at the track I run at.

She was definitely 200 pounds. I've worked around horses, and people are usually shocked at much horses weigh.

I live by the rule that any animal that has survived in the wild for thousands of generations is a muscle machine!

I’ve hunted deer in East Tennessee for almost 60 years...I’ve killed 47 whitetails and the largest was a 7 point buck weighed 178 lbs before dressed out...

I also have had several horses in my life My favorite was a fine Appaloosa mare named Millie, name after my favorite beer at the time...Miller High Life...LOL

Food for thought.

Whatever you shoot/have to shoot....

make sure it’s dead.

Deer played possum, and came out the survivor.

Years ago I saw a big die being hit by a truck as it was entering the highway. It only hit the deer’s head, but I was sure it was dead.

I was driving a little Plymouth Horizon hatchback so put the back seat down to make room for it. To keep the blood that was coming from the nose from getting on the carpet I pulled a plastic shopping bag over the head. She was so big it was all I could do to roll her in the car.

About 30 minutes later while on the interstate, I heard a snorting sound and looked in my rearview mirror. There was this white plastic shopping bag banging against the car roof as the deer was trying to stand up.

I pulled over and grabbed the tire iron I had laying in the passenger seat, beating the plastic bag until it really was dead. Scared the heck out of me.

Ended up when I butchered it, there were twin fawns in it ready to be delivered. That was why it was so heavy.

I knew a guy that him and his buddy went out and outlawed an old doe. They stopped at the local pub to have a quick one. A guy walked in and tapped him on the shoulder and said “you might want to go out and finish that doe off. She’s standing up in your pickup “.

Deer hunting Rule #1. Never assume the deer is dead. When approaching a downed deer always bring your gun with you, with a live round in the chamber.

Rule #2. Look at the deer’s eyes. Are they open? Chances are pretty good it’s DOA. If not, be wary.

Rule #3. Poke the deer with the barrel of your gun. Be prepared to put another round in it if necessary.

Follow these simple rules and you won’t wind up dead and be the subject of ridicule on social media.

Double-tap. It’s the only way to be sure.

You cannot double-tap with a muzzleloader.
