The NFL Crisis: a League in Irreversible Decline?
FieldGulls.com ^ | 10-16-2019 | Jeff Blevins

As a long time fan, I find myself consuming less pro football then ever before. The product is becoming unwatchable. It wasn't always like this. No one knows that a catch is. No one knows what PI is. QB's are off limits because of their brand potential.I fear we're witnessing the death by a thousand cuts in real time. It's turning into my personal salsa nightmare.

Okay, let me explain.

I used to frequent a little Mexican joint here in LA - they had this amazing black salsa. Over time, I noticed the salsa losing it's kick, as if they were watering it down. That downhill trend continued until I stopped consuming it and went elsewhere for a higher quality product. The NFL is becoming that salsa, and I'm consuming less and less.

Let's take a look at the patient's vitals, diagnose 'em, and then deep dive into some of the major symptoms.

Well they are still far more professional than the LFL...but for some reason I like watching the LFL better.

The refs would seem to be “critical path” in any organized gambling fixing scheme.

That may explain some of the bizarre calls discussed here.

(I haven’t watched since the kneeling stuff, so I haven’t seen recent questionable calls.)

Also, game fixing can be about points, not just outcomes, and gamblers also gamble on results per quarter, etc.

Concur.

If the NFL is going to pander to the pink crowd and then to every other splinter group, then they should anticipate an opposite push back (see Newton’s first law of thermodynamics).

An analysis was done by the Wall Street Journal which showed that over the span of 3+ hours, exactly 11 minutes of football was played, that is, from the hiking of the ball to conclusion of play — 11 minutes within 3+ hours. Commercials, commercials, commercials. Weekends are precious. It’s hard to commit ~50% of one day to watch one game.

Every Monday and Thursday night game is now behind a cable channel pay wall. I refuse to shell out more money just to watch those games, even for my favored home team.

Colin Kaepernick.

Yep. Good read. The NFL is dead. Just waiting for the certificate to be signed.

My Dad used to say “Money is going to KILL the game.”. Dad, as usual, was right.

The NFLPA, Unionized “Zebes”, Instant Replay, Liberal Team Owners and Roger Goodell are all to blame.

I skimmed it and no mention of taking the knee. That’s what drove me away. I heard recently they don’t do that anymore?

No way to tell. TV now always cuts to commercial at anthem time.

The owners supposedly have an agreement with the players union not to. In exchange the owners are donating tens of millions of dollars to "social justice" organizations.

Not a win in my view. As maddening as the kneeling was, funding whacko organizations is doing actual, tangible damage to the country.

The knee thing is just a symptom of the fact that people really can’t relate to most of the players today. They basically root for laundry, instead of the guys who are wearing the laundry.

Thanks for posting good article.

Sideline question: Is he right about the salsa?
I have found that peppers do not taste as hot as I get used to them. Right?

Thanks to legalized sports betting, professional and collegiate sports are one scandal away from going the way of the dodo.

Prog politics + petulant players + insane rules + obsession with fantasy leagues + neutered defenses = completely unwatchable.

Roger Goodell is following the Woke Zombie rule:

Behind every Woke Zombie is a criminal enterprise waiting to get out....

“Before the start of every NFL game, I take a knee, say a prayer, and change the channel.” (pardon the edit)

Those kneeling behemoths are praying!!? No, their `prayer’ is “in your face, whitey!!!”

Anyway, those who say the real turnoffs are the flags, play reviews, and other clock stoppers, are spot on. And the ads don’t just waste time, they’re the same ones repeated over & over.

Personal note: we live in a high rise & gather in the `penthouse’ on Saturdays to watch college ball; we bring food & drink & socialize so it’s more than just the game.

But the stupid calls they make!! And then we shout insults at the refs and leave the TV room disgruntled.

A session on FR brings blessed relief afterward.

I feel the same about baseball. I was a life long Yankee fan. In the mid 90’s, either 94’ or 95’, the teams in the World Series went on strike and the game never played. What really got me annoyed was these guys were making great salaries to play a kids game and they left the fans stranded. Haven’t watched a game since.

I plan on watching only one football game per year, and that’s Army-Navy. The only exception to that rule is if either Army or Navy plays in one of the bowl games. That essentially leaves my football exposure to, at most, three games per year.

Rugby. Discovered during the Olympics. My wife and I love it, but it’s hard to find and we don’t really have skin in the game so to speak, no ‘home’ team to root for, but fun to watch, especially the women. Not girls you’d want to mess with.

“protests” - that’s the only veiled mention.

I’ll put up with a lot, over-officiating, etc, but the kneeling was a middle finger to all of us and that doesn’t just get swept away. They didn’t even formally apologize.

I’ll go to restaurants with sub-par service if the food is great, but this would be like having a few servers spit in customers faces and then brush it aside like everything is hunky-dory. Oh, they stopped the employees from spitting in people’s faces, but they’re still working there and have been warned of disciplinary action if they do it again. No thanks.

I haven’t watched a minute of the NFL this year. Good riddance.

Army-Navy is, by far, the greatest football game on the planet.

Those guys play like it’s their last day on Earth, and nobody is kissing their arses to get them through school.

I’ve always wanted to go in person, but as the POTUS is always there I presume the security lines are 3 to 4 hours long.
