As a long time fan, I find myself consuming less pro football then ever before. The product is becoming unwatchable. It wasn't always like this. No one knows that a catch is. No one knows what PI is. QB's are off limits because of their brand potential.I fear we're witnessing the death by a thousand cuts in real time. It's turning into my personal salsa nightmare.
Okay, let me explain.
I used to frequent a little Mexican joint here in LA - they had this amazing black salsa. Over time, I noticed the salsa losing it's kick, as if they were watering it down. That downhill trend continued until I stopped consuming it and went elsewhere for a higher quality product. The NFL is becoming that salsa, and I'm consuming less and less.
Let's take a look at the patient's vitals, diagnose 'em, and then deep dive into some of the major symptoms.

It seems whenever I tune into a game, every other play is either reviewed or a penalty is called. There is no flow to the game. And yes it is destroying the game as watchable.
they cheatriots first sb wins were all orchestrated in the wake of 9/11, they wanted a patriotic response, the added all american two-yard tommie...cheated their way to the sb’s....
that’s why this supposedly ‘minor’ issue with camera placement was massively fined and draft picks lost, plus goodell himself burning all the so-called ‘minor’ camera placement film.....
I pretty much just watch my sports now on my laptop and check in occasionally, I usually don’t even bother with a football game until it’s in the 4th quarter if the game is close.
“The article touches on one of my favorite conspiracy theoriesorganized crime gamblers fixing sports games.
We really havent heard of any examples in the history of the NFL.”
It’s interesting that football seems to have had less of that sort of thing than baseball, basketball, and boxing. Maybe they have just done a better job of keeping it hidden. Football might be more difficult to fix because it involves more people at every level, so more could go wrong. There’s so much money at stake that gamblers have to at least be trying to influence outcomes.
Even college football is headed in the same direction, all of the traditions that made College Football great are being done away with, in order to turn it into a Mini-NFL.
“I havent completely kicked the NFL habit. But watching is down about 90%.”
ditto. i quit watching pretty much all games except my home team, but they’re so awful, i prerecord and after we get behind in a big way, fast-forward to the snaps for the rest of the game.
still love college ball though, which is really almost a different game given how it’s played compared to NFL games ...
You think it's bad on TV, it's even worse when you are at the game in person, with all of the delays. That's why I like soccer. Two 45-minute halves with no stoppages, well at least until they started with the VAR nonsense. If I were the "Czar of Sports", my first act would be to do away with all video replays. Make referees better!
“They have the right to kneel, I have the right not to watch.”
Exactly, and I chose to not watch the NFL.
“didnt even notice how the game ended.”
sounds a lot like watching a baseball game ;-)
I don’t watch it much anymore, but made the mistake of watching the MNF Packers-Lions game.
Blatantly bad calls at critical junctures of the game that guaranteed the Packers win. It looked like the fix was in.
It may not be the last NFL game I watch this year, but I’d be hard pressed to think why I would want to watch another.
Step 1: Mass purge of black thugs, gang-bangers, and woman beaters.
Step 2: Recruit clean-cut, motivated young ballplayers, mostly white. Blacks who aspire to emulate gentleman athletes from the old days — like Gale Sayers, John Mackey, or Paul Warfield — will also be more than welcome.
Problem solved.
I used to enjoy wasting a couple hours on a chilly Sunday afternoon watching football. I haven’t watched a down in two years now and don’t miss it a bit. It’s amazing how quickly old habits die.
Great point about organized crime, gambling and game-fixing. NFC title game last year was a good example; PTB decided they wanted the Rams in the Super Bowl, so they found a way for that to happen, i.e. ‘missing’ the pass interference call, which was obvious to everyone. So what did the league do? Make a non-penalty reviewable! WTF! I’m tired of lawyer-ball
Back in the 80’s the Redskins/Cowboys games were Holy Wars.
Now they are both blah, with the Redskins in particular having been mismanaged into the ground.
It’s just damn boring.
Why watch the game anyway when you can see 10 minutes of highlights on YouTube?
I am about the same but after watching the Lions get ripped off Monday, I might just switch to WWE. The quality of referees is similar.
...and if you had paid attention to that game you’d have been even less impressed - the officiating ruined the game. At least 5 horrible calls all went GB way on 3rd downs - resulting in 1st downs and scoring that wouldn’t have happened otherwise.
...I’ve never seen a “13 men on the field” go unnoticed either. Even the mild mannered Barry Sanders called it all out.
Agree with your comments. And while this fellow seems like a decent man, why have a commentator on named “Booger”? And then they go and ruin a perfectly fine Scottish surname to boot.
It was good. I used to live and die with the Green Bay Packers. I don’t care. I don’t watch. The NFL sucks. It’s a wretched product.
And he forgot the damnable “holiday’ ads every December to blot out Christmas.
And you have the right to criticize them when they kneel.
What is NFL?
