Why does the IRS need five million rounds of ammunition? Why did Health and Human Services purchase four million rounds over the last eight years and stockpile five submachine guns? And what about the 800,000 rounds purchased by the Social Security Administration?
These questions we’ve raised before have newfound urgency in light of recent events.
In December, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) published a report to congress quantifying purchases of $1.5 billion in firearms, ammunition, and tactical equipment by federal agencies outside of the Pentagon (FY2010-FY2017).
These findings were consistent with our oversight published at The Wall Street Journal in summer 2016, which found 67 federal agencies outside of the Department of Defense purchased $1.4 billion in guns, ammunition, and military-style equipment (FY2006-FY2014).

There’s lots of federal employees that are considered armed agents and are authorized to pack although many maybe most don’t.
But notice the article makes sure the headline mentions “Trump” as though he began this.

I doubt that the Trump administration is responsible. This is probably completing contracts let during the Obama administration, and expected to be executed under Her Awfulness, Hillary Rod'em Clinton.

In the 3 counties I have lived in, officers & deputies had to pay for their own ammo to stay qualified. The County did not purchase it. I did bookkeeping for a gun store in N Calif, and I witnessed deputies coming in to buy ammo for practice, etc.

Yes people forget it is not just IRS, since IRS is under Department of Treasury and they have a lot of armed personnel that have nothing to do with the IRS. My brother in law is retired but was a Treasury Agent and his job had nothing to do with IRS but he was certainly armed.
