Lest we forget, Gandhi started his career in South Africa where he and other Indians were classified as ‘colored’—a step below whites and a very big step above black Africans. He fought for the rights of coloreds and may well have been indifferent to blacks. At the beginning of the last century there were three independent black nations: Liberia, Ethiopia and Haiti. Contemporary feelings were that blacks weren’t capable of self government.
