A former Fort Worth police officer who resigned Monday after fatally shooting a black woman in her home has been booked in jail for murder, according to inmate records on the Tarrant County Correction Center website. Aaron Dean, who is white, fatally shot 28-year-old Atatiana Jefferson early Saturday morning as she played video games with her nephew.

Unfortunately a cop’s training does not allow him to deal with people humanely. The training we give them that gives the confidence to deal with a 300lb mook that he has to handle alone does not give him the tools to handle an otherwise harmless person who is mentally not all there.
If we try to change that, we will end up with ineffective cops when we need them to be the most confident and willing to take the most damage to protect society.
When we try to make somebody everything, we end up making them nothing.

Policing becomes very ineffective when they walk in to the wrong house and shoot a man eating ice cream or when they creep up on an innocent citizen’s home and blast them through a window.
That makes the police ineffective because they have no trust with the community.
Because of this cop in Fort Worth, there is someone in this country who will not call the police when they think something is amiss at their neighbor’s home.
And at times, there may be something very amiss at that neighbor’s home, but they police will not be called as they do not want to be shot and their neighbor to be shot.
Perfectly sums up nearly every case of cops shooting innocent citizens. Kudos.

Because we are expecting officers to operate out of their training. If you want cops to be more than state bodymen, double their salaries, triple their training, and bump up their IQ’s by 50 points. Good luck finding 150 IQ men who have the size and strength to handle the worst in society. *shrug
Otherwise it just means more people die needlessly.
Don’t send cops to do welfare checks. Send social workers or counselors. Maybe backed up by a cop siting in the car.
Cops especially sheriffs Dept used to be better overall
They might have taken cash from bootleggers and let the occasional whorehouse operate unencumbered but they were more common sense and didn’t view those they are supposed to protect with the same suspicion and disdain

And if I had a gun on me they were cool about it and liked to talk shop on guns and deer hunting as they wrote my ticket
It’s a different world of Lon Horuchis now and worse like the Houston red dog unit killed those poor folks in their home ...and their dog
lets do away with affirmative action and start assigning jobs that nature deems.....
which means that women will from now on forever get full custody of their children... and only men will get drafted.....

I agree with you.
Many PD’s are doing that but it is costly and such resources are spread thin.
However, we need far more investment in that type of policing/social work.
We don’t need Phd’s when an AA degree can do just fine, I think.
This is the type of person politicians want as cops. Mediocre IQ and over paid, thus beholden to the politicians for a better lifestyle than they could ever get anywhere else.
They may be getting charges for the heinous things they do right now but wait until the Left takes over completely and these same people will be lauded and allowed to run roughshod over the serfs.
Stupid cop shot from outside, through the window AS he was barking commands at the window and wall. Something like “stop or BANG!!! I’ll shoot” I don’t remember the exact phrase he used but it’s on the original body cam video. All of that took place outside the house in a matter of like 5 seconds.
Unfortunately for Atatiana Jefferson it was a “lucky” shot in the dark.
RIP Ms. Jefferson, hopefully as much justice as possible will be ajudicated on the trigger happy scared cop. Ideally the Death Penalty, but I’m not counting on it. Prayers for the Nephew that was playing video games with His Aunt. He’s going to be messed up for a long time, maybe for All His life.
Second of all I'm a huge supporter of "jury nullification"...in certain circumstances.Regardless of what Texas law might say I firmly believe that "murder",as *I* define the word,requires premeditation.If one causes the death of another without premeditation then it constitutes something less than "murder".
If I was a juror in this case and heard no evidence of premeditation I'd vote "not guilty" on "murder"...but would almost certainly vote "guilty" on a lesser charge..."reckless homicide" for example.

That she parked on the wrong level and walked past many signs for the wrong level says something was very wrong. That she promptly shot the man instead of challenging him or assessing the threat is a problem. That’s why she was convicted of murder.
Agreed. Give teachers discipline authority so that they aren’t calling cops for tantruming kids. If you are concerned about welfare, send a social worker, not an armed cop.
Maybe She worked nights or it was the Nephew’s Birthday. Maybe they were just really absorbed and time flew by. There is no Law saying that you cannot play video games in the middle of the night in your own house or any other private location.
A horrible mistake, but still a mistake, not murder.
If it was a Civilian Joe or Jane Public would have made that shot would You be saying a “Mistake” was made ?
If it was Your Aunt, Mother, Wife, Sister or Daughter would it still be a “Mistake” ?
I’m thinking probably not.
And for all the Posts talking about Ms. Atatiana Jefferson having a Pistol and CCW/CHL that is irrelevant (especially in Texas) unless She was a convicted felon She was well within Her Rights to be armed in Her own house and property even without a CCW/CHL. In fact if She had shot the cop it could’ve very well have been covered by the Castle Doctrine in Texas.
MLK did have flaws for sure. But given his level of education, intelligence and accomplishments, he was SEVERAL cuts above Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton. I that because I especially loathe these race-baiters.
There is only murder in Texas. No first or 2nd degree.
