Unfortunately a cop’s training does not allow him to deal with people humanely. The training we give them that gives the confidence to deal with a 300lb mook that he has to handle alone does not give him the tools to handle an otherwise harmless person who is mentally not all there.
If we try to change that, we will end up with ineffective cops when we need them to be the most confident and willing to take the most damage to protect society.
When we try to make somebody everything, we end up making them nothing.

Policing becomes very ineffective when they walk in to the wrong house and shoot a man eating ice cream or when they creep up on an innocent citizen’s home and blast them through a window.
That makes the police ineffective because they have no trust with the community.
Because of this cop in Fort Worth, there is someone in this country who will not call the police when they think something is amiss at their neighbor’s home.
And at times, there may be something very amiss at that neighbor’s home, but they police will not be called as they do not want to be shot and their neighbor to be shot.
