Homeschooling cuts about $2 million from Harrison School System's funding (WVa)

CLARKSBURG — The home-schooled student population in Harrison County has increased by hundreds over the last eight to 10 years, according to officials.

Because of all those students leaving the school system to be taught at home leaves, Harrison County has received less in state aid formula funding each year.

On Oct. 1, when the county submitted its enrollment total to the state Department of Education, the number of home-schooled children had reached 582, according to Harrison Schools Attendance Director Jim Kirby.

Over his 15 years as attendance director, Kirby said he’s seen the number of home-schooled students continue to rise. When he first started working in the county, the number of homeschooled children was approximately 180 to 200 and stayed fairly steady throughout the year, he said.

“As time has progressed, the number of homeschoolers across the state have skyrocketed,” Kirby said. “We have doubled or tripled our numbers, and after speaking with other attendance directors around the state, they are concerned with their county numbers increasing as well.”

Kirby said the increase in homeschool students has a direct effect on the services that school systems can provide their school system as their state aid formula decreases based on the number of students enrolled.

When individuals are allowed to have the “freedom to choose” what they believe to be best for their children, they will exercise that choice in matters of education.

But they don't need as much money for supplies to teach. Probably they just don't want to get rid of all the administrators pulling down big salaries for filling out reports and such.

What ever happened to balanced reporting or is this an OP-ED?

Last evening we went to a bbq at my sister in law’s cousin’s home. My brother & SiL were visiting & I had never met her cousin. They have a daughter in 1st grade.

The wife and I got to talking & I asked her what she thought of her daughter’s school. They both are disappointed. I was a little surprised because we have one of the best school districts in the state. She said that they both worked with their daughter like all good parents. She said they teach to the lowest common denominator and that she knew all the things they were teaching. Common sense things that poor parenting does not give a child. They are looking into private school.

That’s what it comes down to, a numbers game.

More asses in seats: More Money.

Nowhere in that excerpt at least, did they address WHY this happens. Keep in mind they still have to cough up the $$$ in their property tax payments to pay for school resources they are declining to use.

At practically every level in life, esp. regards to public monies, the feedback mechanisms have been removed. The educrats look at children as footsoldiers to be programmed and turned against their parents. This isn’t “conspiracy theory”, just ask them.

When schools are so screwed up that parents are willing to yank their kids out and pay twice (one way or another) then that should be a clue. Is this ever a cause for reflection or introspection on the part of the teaching profession in this article? My guess is “no” (because I’m not interested in reverse engineering a bunch of word salad.)

They will put these people in camps as soon as they get a chance, or the digital Panopticon for now. I think Europe has outlawed home schooling to some degree. At best, they will sort of allow it if you squint really hard and avoid noticing all the hoops and circuses they require, and they will still extract tribute whether used or not. It has turned into a racket, a shakedown for sinecured cultural bombthrowers.

“It costs almost $2 million to teach a few hundred kids?”

It does when you have to support parasitical political and union bosses.

We need to have a revolution to remove this graft and political patronage.

Will tax them for home schooling in the amount the schools would have received had the student attended.

Do a quality job and this wouldn’t happen. As it is the educational system in this country has hit rock bottom and our children are suffering as a result.
