Until Saturday, the list of legitimate national title contenders in college football fit in a neat box. There was Alabama, Georgia and LSU in the SEC. Clemson from the ACC, Ohio State from the Big Ten and Oklahoma from the Big 12 were mixed among them. Sure, there were arguments and outliers for other programs and leagues. But as the season passed its halfway point, there were really only compelling cases for six programs to be hoisting the crystal ball in mid-January. On Saturday, Georgia took a stunning exit that forced us to re-examine the legitimacy of the remaining dozen undefeated teams in college football.

One freeper was so incensed about Kirby Smart making horrible game decisions costing UGa the game that his post got deleted from here. The loss is not necessarily fatal as UGa can win out and still make the playoff. ABC/ESPN showed a stat that four of the last similarly ranked teams with a similar loss as UGa did make the playoff. Did UGa drink some Koolaid laced with Nick Saban's Special Formula rat poison?
A Big 12 = 10 game broke out deep in SEC Country as LSU and Florida traded shots all night long. I was really impressed with Florida's ability to produce long drives against LSUs defense. Florida played the game without their NFL quality DE/LB Jonathan Greenard. Dave Aranda earned his $2.5 MM salary as he shut down Florida's TE Kyle Pitts in the 2nd half after he torched the Bayou Bengals' defense in the first half. Florida only score 7 pts in the 2nd half. Aranda got some assistance from questionable play calling from Coach Mullen. The key play of the game was Mullen called a pass on 3rd and 1 in the Red Zone. Trask threw a pick to true freshman CB Darrly Stingley Jr; yes the grandson of the NE Patriot WR who was paralyzed on a vicious cheap shot in a preseason game by Jack Tatum. A lot of people who took Florida +13.5 were pissed at Mullen's weird calls as Florida tried to make it a one score game deep in LSU territory late in the 4th quarter.

Was there a sighting of the shirtless FSU professor reading "War and Peace" at Clemson?
Bit disappointed with the ABC/ESPN crew as I could not hear any band music during LSU v. Florida. I was looking forward to "Geaux Tigers". Not sure if that was due to location of the LSU band or lack of microphones.
I tried to find some Matthew McConaughey reaction videos but could not find any.
I have a soft spot for Herm Edwards from his time coaching the J-E-T-S. His Sun Devils are now 5 - 1 shutting up all the people who mocked his hiring. The guy is a master motivator.
Alongside bronze helmets, archaeologist have discovered the remains of Michigan State talented players on offense: Curt Cousins, LeLe'Veon Bell, and Tony Lippett.
After both UVa and Wake Forest lost, Clemson might be the only top 25 ranked ACC team

Until they have a real 8 team playoff including all the Big 5 champions it is just fantasy football. The Ducks are playing as good as anyone in the nation and have non chance.
I got the impression that the Florida coach blew that game. The second half Florida’s quarterback Trask drove his team down deep in LSU territory and then all of a sudden he was taken out and some guy named Jones came in and tried to run the ball, he got nowhere. Later, 3rd. and 1 and the coach calls for a pass after putting Trask back in the game.
I look forward to the ceremonial burning of the awful Hawkeye mustard jar uniforms tomorrow morning in Iowa City.
If Hayden Fry was dead, he’d be rolling in his grave...
Those uniforms were hideous.
As it stands now my boys are looking good to slingshot around the pack.
I hate those bizarro uniforms Iowa wore. And their offense has sucked two weeks in a row. Mr. Ferentz methinks is long past retirement time.
“If Hayden Fry was dead, hed be rolling in his grave...”
How about Forest Evashevski? He is gone and is rolling over.
The ranking system is a fraud. You can’t have 10 teams in the top 25, to include Baylor at #22, undefeated and have them play teams that are quality. It’s obvious they don’t play each other or they wouldn’t be undefeated. All the major teams “pad” their schedule with weak teams to keep their record good so they can get a bowl game for the money.
I was involved with this many years ago at the junior college level when we went into the championship game #2, against the #1. We beat the he(( out of them and when the ratings came out on Monday, they didn’t change. So much for trusting the media.

FL vs LSU. The SEC doesn’t play defense. (That’s what the SEC homeboys always say when there’s a high scoring Big XII game)
Where’s the discussion of Wisconsin as possible playoff contender. They annihilated ranked MSU yesterday and have looked mighty impressive.
UGA losing to unranked and rather sub-average SoCarolina pretty much DOES kill their chances for playoffs. Only Ohio State losing to 6-6 VaTech and LSU losing to UofKy in years past have overcome such losses.
Agreed. I have always though the 8-teamer would be the best way...
The bowls don’t lose any money (in fact they gain) and teams like an 11-0 Central Florida or Boise State or even a 9-2 Georgia team won’t get snubbed.
8 works. 3 weekends. Start it earlier.
That was my take too. The FL. Coach forfeited their own momentum. And iced his own QB.
They couldn’t “cut the mustard.”
Ducks lost to Auburn who lost to Florida who lost to LSU. Ducks have a real soft schedule, obviously.
Clemson, Oregon, and Boise State have smooth roads ahead and should continue to move up. The SEC will massacre each other with a lot of those undefeated and one-loss teams going to 2-3 losses. Ditto for the big 10 and 12, but Ohio State and Oklahoma will probably prevail. Notre Dame has smooth sailing and SMU has a real gauntlet to run. App state has to get by South Carolina, which will either be good or bad depending on the health of Ryan Hilinsky... no depth at QB, as seen in the UGA game.
