Off-duty sheriff’s deputy charged with shooting in apparent road rage incident

An Orange County sheriff’s deputy has been accused of firing two shots into a fleeing vehicle that he had tailgated and tried to block while off duty Monday.

William Pine, 49, of Brookfield now faces two counts of attempted aggravated assault. He serves as a deputy for the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, according to the Vermont State Police.

He has been placed on administrative leave, according to the department.

State police said the incident occurred in Williamstown at about 7:45 p.m. Monday.

Two men — 41-year-old Kevin Goodale of Brookfield and 37-year-old Nathan Lyonnais of Barton — told troopers they were traveling in a Jeep Wrangler on Stone Road that night when a gray Nissan Titan pickup truck started tailgating them.

Investigators later determined Pine was driving the truck.

Goodale and Lyonnais told troopers that the truck trailed them at a close distance until reaching the junction with state Route 64, where they stopped. Then the truck pulled in front of the pair at a 45-degree angle, blocking them, the men told state police.

The two men tried to drive away on Route 64, heading toward the Interstate 89 at Exit 5, when they said two gunshots rang out. The first shot blew out the rear window of their Jeep, they told troopers, and the second shot struck the vehicle’s rear bumper.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Department asked state police to investigate the next day after the two men reported the incident. The men said the person involved had identified themselves as a deputy, according to a press release from the department.

Troopers investigated and issued Pine a citation to appear in court on Friday. State police did not detail how they determined Pine’s involvement.

Pine had been a police officer in Berlin in 2017, according to Times Argus reports from the time. He resigned in April that year to become an Orange County deputy, the newspaper reported. The town had paid to put Pine through the police academy in 2016 as part of an effort to address police department shortages.

A Rutland Herald report in 2016 about academy graduations said Pine had retired from a 23-year career with the U.S. Army before pursuing police work.

“He became a police officer because he wanted to continue to serve,” the paper reported.

Citizens in the State of Vermont have been hit with 'Red Flag' warrants for much less than this inferior Sheriff's Deputy's actions. Are LE subject to a different set of laws than the rest of us? This guy belongs in prison - let's see if the bleeding hearts in black robes give him a slap on the wrist for this.

” Are LE subject to a different set of laws than the rest of us?”

You’re really asking this?

In this state when they start thinking that way, they have a habit of disappearing.

I suspect there’s something missing from the report, because people don’t just suddenly appear and start tailgating then block a vehicle for no reason at all.

But, this man clearly has issues. He had no authority to stop them, detain them or shoot at them.

He’s a hothead, a loose cannon and should never be on any police force, ever.

He should also do some time in my opinion.

People certainly do that - when they’re in a rush and believe the folks in front of them aren’t going fast enough. The longer they’re stuck behind someone going the speed limit, the angrier they get. This ‘Deputy’ is a ticking time bomb and will kill someone if he’s not stripped of his badge.

Last year unknown vehicles put spotlights on my home and my neighbor’s home. After we both let loose with a barrage of fire into our woods, one vehicle beat feet out of our property - turned out that was the State Police back-up to two Sheriff’s Deputies conducting an illegal search.
The audio of the event is hilarious.

I’m going out on a limb and guessing this is yet another cop who failed his Psych Eval and was hired anyway.

Here’s what appears to be happening in this State - cops who get fired from local city/town departments are immediately picked up by county sheriffs. Our sheriffs have to get their own contracts to cover their costs and they require manpower to accomplish that, so any warm body will do.

Prison Pfffft. Nobody goes to prison in this state, it’s too expensive to ship people to Arizona for incarceration. The moonbats here are all over “reparative justice” or whatever the new lefty goupthink name is.

There’s the Chittenden county version and the NEK version of ‘reparative justice’.

Of course it is - look at the hoopla over even prosecuting the guy who hacked his wife to death with a meat cleaver.
