Treasure hunters have struck gold while diving a wreck thought to have sunk with tens of millions of dollars worth of currency.

The Steamship North Carolina, a 200ft long side wheel steamer, sank on July 25, 1840, after colliding with her sister ship, the Governor Dudley, 20 miles off the South Carolina coast.

And while all passengers and crew were able to escape from one ship to the other, their cargo was lost – including a hoard of gold coins.

Interesting headline. Did the journalist expect the gold to rust?

After the US Gubmint takes their share, they should have plenty left over for...maybe a case of beer.

Good point. That’s the beauty of gold. It’s one of the most non reactive metals.

It’s never me. I’m never the one who finds a shipwreck, or discovers that the painting in my bathroom is actually a lost Renoir.

:-P

If they have ANY common sense, one goes in the pocket for every two “discovered”. The government plays it’s games, and 20 miles out to sea....the people play theirs.

Just my luck. I’ve done metal detecting all over the SC coast and never knew I needed to go 20 miles east.

The currency is a highly sought after collector's item and a previous haul fetched $700,000

When you look at the number of people involved in the search for the length of time they are doing this plus the cost of salvage equipment, this is like finding a gold mine. It' not the huge payoff everyone thinks. And that's before governments take a. their share of the salvage and b. the income taxes and c. legal costs to defend your find against claims.

Explorers find 7 shipwrecks off Carolinas, all believed to hold gold coins and jewelry

https://www.charlotteobserver.com/news/local/article230515904.html

The same team of sea explorers that found hundreds of gold and
silver coins on North Carolina’s S.S. Pulaski shipwreck says it
has located seven more potentially valuable shipwrecks off the coast
of North and South Carolina.

The company will also continue pulling valuables off Steamship
Pulaski and Steamship North Carolina, both of which are on the
sea floor off the Carolinas.

“Interesting headline. Did the journalist expect the gold to rust?”

indeed. article also has long, bogus description of why the gold coins are in such good shape, none of which includes the fact that gold is essentially incorruptible, with aqua regia being one of the few common regents that will react with gold ...

When I was a student at North GA College in Dahlonega, the school had a complete set of Dahlonega mint gold on display in the administration building. It was in a protruding from the wall in a display that let you see front and back of the coins. It probably could have easily been ripped off the wall but in the early 70s, no one worried about that sort of thing.
