Newborn dropped off at Houston fire station

Just hours after birth, a woman dropped off an infant early Tuesday at a southwest Houston fire station, police said.

The baby, who police believe had been born only a few hours earlier, was dropped off around 12:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Houston Fire Department Station no. 21 at the 10500 block of South Main Street, according HPD Lt. Larry Crowson.

Under the Texas Safe Haven Law, also known as the Baby Moses Law, a person can drop off a newborn baby under the age of 60 days old to a designated safe haven, such as a hospital or a fire station, without fear of prosecution if the person is unable to care for the child, according to the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services.

It is nice that this method worked this time, but there are reasons why dumpsters are more popular. Turning the baby over to a person in a fire station is high risk for the mother. Her face will be permanently recorded in the fire station's video. She has to risk being identified and having her photo and name put on the internet. She has to worry about a clueless fire station employee saying, "Hey lady, you can't just leave that baby here!" And so on.

By contrast, Safe Haven Baby Boxes give the mother almost guaranteed anonymity. All she has to do is cover her face and put the baby in the box, 24/7/365. Then she walks away. Easy and almost risk free for the mother.
