MacOS Catalina review: Apple lets the Mac be a pro, and makes the iPad a partner
CNET ^ | 10-7-2019 | Jason Hiner

If you've been a fan of the Mac during the past decade, you've probably felt like a kid who had been an only child until their parents surprised everyone by having a baby late in life. But, this wasn't just any new baby. The little wunderkind went on to become a straight-A student, a sports star and a decent human being loved by everyone in the community. Every once in a while, people remember that the kid has an older sibling -- who they admit is pretty cool, too. That's the Mac.

But, after more than a decade of living in the shadow of the iPhone, the Mac is having a comeback year in 2019. At WWDC in June, Apple not only unveiled the next generation of Mac software -- MacOS 10.15 Catalina -- but also announced a new Mac Pro with the kind of eye-popping specs that professionals have all but begged Apple to make for years. Apple paired it with a matching Pro Display XDR, with even more impressive features. Both products start at $5,999 and are aimed at the highest of high-end creators, like special effects artists, animators and movie studios.

Yes, Microsoft tried to do that with Your Phone. It’s pretty lame. Dell’s is better but it can be finicky.

The installer hung during the installation restart and I finally had to push the power button to force a restart. Took awhile but it got to the desktop OK.

It’s great having my reminders back. I did have to finally give up Quicken 2007 Lion Edition but I’ve gotten used to Quicken 2019. I still have to get Airdrop working.

I’ve loaded the Dell one but haven’t played with it very much. It annoys me I have to have a brand new Dell for it to work, you can’t load it on my 3 years old or so Dell.

There has been nothing “PRO” about any MacBook since the 2016 redesign... until they admit that, all thr OS upgrades in the world won’t fix their issues

It did work on some older ones and non dell machines but they killed it because of MS’s lame ass your phone product.

Apple includes word processor, presentation, spreadsheet, publishing free with every Mac.
Updates are free.
System software is free.

That concept of free escapes Microsoft app users. I switch between the built-in Apple offerings and the MS Office Suite on my Macs. The Apple apps are pretty good, just as good as the MS stuff. The MS apps cost us money, lots of money, but were needed for swapping work with our jobs. And Apple certainly did beat that value of the MS offerings. You buy a Windows PC, and you get trial use of some apps but you end up paying a lot to add them to your PC. Especially the MS apps. Apple includes apps for free.

I end up using MS Office instead of the Mac apps not because either are any better, but because we can afford it and because we need to be 100% certain that business files we send to others will work properly the first time.

If didn't have a business to run and my budget were limited I would be 100% happy with the free Mac applications.

Other than giving their OS away for free, and their own office-related app suite... again for free. I have a license for Office 365 out of necessity (primarily dealing with docs and projects of others). I use Apple’s Pages & Numbers both on a regular basis and find them very close in features to MS’s offerings for everything I need them for - and a whole lot more intuitive and “usable”. No subscription. No renewals, and automatic (and free) updates.

One major advantage to how Apple has opened up and expanded their beta program - with a huge growth in consumers using the public betas - is that these major OS upgrades often have FAR fewer bugs than those released in the days before massive beta programs.

alling them your children reveals a startling lack of humanity.

I'm an engineer, do I look like a fooking people person???

your children would do better to stay far away from you and not make any requests.

One lives with me, and one is a thousand miles away (politically and geographically) Both make requests for money, and I gladly provide every time.

However they have a massive downside which cannot be said of bread.

Obesity is fueled by cheap carbs purchased with the wages from non-physical labor. If your Talmudic sage did his own plowing, harvesting, grinding, kneading and baking he would be more than amazed, he would be humbled and grateful for every crust, 'give us this day our daily bread' would be a heartfelt thanks with every meal. (Not saying he wasn't grateful, but it would hit a lot closer to home if he was invested in the soil to table cycle with all the attendant work and worry)

Engineers have a useful skill but they are going to go the way of football players.

What did you mean by that?

Hmmm. I’ll buy that.

As long as India and China and the H-1B program exist, we won’t get a football star salary, though...
