As I wrote in an earlier newspaper article, Both white sharks and seals are Federally protected , seals live about 30 years and white sharks 60-70 years. They are not going away. -tom
East coast liberals must taste good to sharks...
There is another reason to not go more than knee deep in the North Atlantic past Columbus Day:
The water is too damn cold.
Cold water in the summer is why New Englanders don't spend a lot of time in the water. In October air temperature is also a factor.
Only about 15% - 20% of the people on the beach are in the water in the summertime .And they are not in the water for long periods of time.
Surfers in wetsuits waiting for, and riding waves are a different story-as are kayakers, and paddleboarders. A longer time for a hesitant white shark to look them over. -Tom
White sharks are the worst
Up until the 1970s white sharks Carcharodon carcharias were called man-eaters.(The movies Blue Water, White Death and Jaws changed that.)
White shark's enormous size results in more fatalities on people than the tiger and bull sharks, two other shark species at the top of the list for fatalities on people.- Tom
“No question the fear of a shark attacks has modified our behavior. “
I don’t even go to the Cape anymore.
Rhode Island: Good surf, warmer water, no sharks, free parking.
BE SURE to wear a BLACK wetsuit & swim at dusk/dawn in murky water, so that you as closely as is possible, resemble a seal in the water.
Then you will be “privileged to meet” a Great White FOR DINNER.

From the article- Many of the sharks spotted throughout the day were between eight and 10 feet and some were even smaller. Two of the sharks tagged were estimated to be 9.5 feet, along with an 8-footer and a 7.5-footer. Skomal believed many more sharks would have been spotted through Wellfleet and Truro if the water quality had been better and provided more visibility.
I wonder if the Whites are being birthed in your area??
(Great Whites are usually about 3 feet long at birth.)

The biologists seem to suggest somewhere east of Long Is, NY.
With all of the tagging being done, I expect in a few years more info will be available.. - Tom
Shark meat tastes good but is a bit on the dry side.....
INTERESTING.
At the rate that the GW numbers are reportedly increasing Worldwide, one wonders how long it will be before limited fishing (and hunting seals, too) for them will be permitted again??

My preference of FRIED shark steaks one inch thick about 2-3 minutes a side on medium heat is: thresher-mako- porbeagle-white in that order.
If you find it is dry put some Italian salad dressing in a plastic bag and put the steak in with it, to marinade it about 2 hrs before frying. - Tom
Fonzie agrees...

He’s on his way to the Cape.
Natanson said, "Sharks don't miraculously go from New York to Massachusetts -- they come through Rhode Island.
" "We don't have as much to entice them with the seal population -- they've always been in this area -- there are just more numbers this year," said Natanson.
Tom,
I live in southern NH. We have the same surfers that hang out on the north end of Hampton beach waiting for the 2-3’ surf break.
Actually, late September, early October IF you get a warm temperature date is the best time to go in the water up here. I love going to Plum Island in Newbury/Newburyport.
That Ipswich Bay area is the best beach area on the north shore. Crane Beach is just south of there. Also, on the north side of Cape Ann where the Annisquam tidal river dumps into the ocean is a Gloucester town beach that you can wade out into the bay about 1/4 mile at low tide. It never gets more than 3’ deep until you get to the main channel.
Of course, you MUST wait until the GREEN HEADS disappear in mid August. Prior to that, they will tear you up
I am south of Boston and notice the surfers here have to dodge ledge and boulders the size of automobile when they surf locally.
With the present noreaster blowing the surf is high and crashing ashore, it is forcast to be worse tomorrow. -Tom
