German car sales enjoyed a strong surge in September, official data showed Wednesday, although the rise was largely attributable to a statistical effect that had weighed on registrations in late 2018.
Last month, a total 244,622 vehicles hit the roads, 22.2 percent more than in September 2018, the KBA transport authority said in a statement.
Growth has been more modest over the year to date, adding 2.5 percent to reach 2.74 million vehicles between January and September.
Over that period, a higher figure was last achieved in the year 2009, the VDA industry federation commented in a statement.
The German data therefore mark a bright spot in an industry battling falling demand worldwide.
Last year in September, German sales had been hit when the European Union introduced new air pollution tests known as WLTP in response to the dieselgate emissions cheating scandal.

What are they talking about?
I wanted to get one of those eighty mile per gallon diesels.
This just proves how stupid government regulations are. Instead of 80 miles per gallon you burn 40 miles per gallon....
The diesel I just traded last year got an honest 53MPG on the Interstate. The one I bought last year, substantially bigger than my previous one...and with a bigger engine (6 cylinders vs 4)...gets an honest 48MPG on the highway.
IIRC there are at least one or two diesel hybrids sold in Europe that do even better than that...but it's my understanding that they're small and rather plain.
European car guys have always known that Euro mpg testing is unrealistic, and I believe theyve also known that Euro emissions testing has always been similarly unrealistic.
While living overseas I had a 4WD club cab Isuzu pickup (built in the came factory in Thailand as the Obamamotors Colorado) with a 4-cyl. Isuzu diesel engine. It got 38 mpg around town. I tried to bribe everybody at the EPA to get them to let me bring it to the states but no dice.
