Is This The End Of The Lithium-Ion Battery?
OilPrice.Com ^ | Oct 01, 2019 | By Tsvetana Paraskova

Researchers have been in a race to find ways to improve lithium-ion batteries. They are also looking to develop alternatives to the lithium-ion battery that would be lower cost and more sustainable to manufacture. And they may just have found one.

Aluminum-based batteries would be cheaper to make, because aluminum is the third most abundant element in the Earth’s crust after oxygen and silicon. Aluminum is also light-weight and could be ideal for use in batteries.

“True. Good thing it’s not that easy to release it, at least with ordinary, everyday matter. “

Very easy to release. That’s where we get our energy!

“I just wish they still made cell phones with replaceable batteries!”

They are still replaceable. I think you meant swappable.

The 5 minute recharge eliminates all mainstream battery technology.

I subscribe to this guy's Youtube channel. He's working on super-capacitors, among other tech. Interesting bloke:

They should focus entirely on recycling the metals. Putting carbon in a landfill is not nearly as bad.

Yep. Swappable, without having to heat them up enough to pry them apart.

Just add antimatter.

HF is good for moving blankets and impact sockets for me.

Still gotta put the energy in a battery in the first place. Therein lies the problem.

then electric cars will go mainstream.

once they figure out how to charge millions of batteries hourly/daily across the country with only wind and solar ...

Um, you’ve described a capacitor not a battery. And maybe thqat is the key ... controlled discharge is the solution.

And the "free stuff!" If you know anyone who needs a volt meter, measuring tape, or LED light, I've got about a dozen each still, after handing them out to everyone I know.

Should tell you how often I visit them. :-)

I use Lithium iron phosphate batteries now.

2500 to 4000 charge cycles, hardly any self discharge over 6 - 12 month period, lightweight and can be discharged to near zero with very little effect on future performance.

Makes for a great backup power supply in the truck.

Why didn’t they use aluminum in the first place then instead of lithium ion?

I don't disagree. There was a hydrogen powered semi recently posted here. A company out of Phoenix is making them. If that technology could be used to power outlets at existing gas and diesel stations then that might also be part of the solution.

Our power grid as it exists today could not handle recharging millions of e-cars day and night. We definitely agree on that point for sure.

Aluminum cans and kegs are coated on the inside, no bare aluminum. Kegs have gone to stainless steel because recycling thieve liked aluminum.
