CVS pulls popular Zantac heartburn drugs from shelves after they are found to contain traces of..

CVS is removing the popular Zantac heartburn treatment and its own generic ranitidine products from its pharmacies after traces of a carcinogen were found in the drugs.

It acted after the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) discovered that some of the pills contained small amounts N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA).

NDMA has been linked to colorectal, stomach, liver and kidney cancers in animal studies.

CVS claims the move was made out of an abundance of caution while the FDA continues to review the risks.

'Zantac brand products and CVS brand ranitidine products have not been recalled, and the FDA is not recommending that patients stop taking ranitidine at this time,' CVS said in a statement.

The CEO of AG's Sandoz unit - which makes Zantac - said last week it was halting distribution of the drug in all its markets, including the United States and Canada, following safety review of the drug by US and European drug regulators.

Zantac is among the most popular medications for heartburn, or acid reflux.

The discovery of NDMA in its active ingredient follows the earlier worrisome discovery of the same carcinogen in blood pressure management drugs like valosartan, irbesartan and similar drugs.

STOP EATING BREAD IF YOU HAVE HEARTBURN

See if it helps.

I used to have a number of ailments that went away when I stopped eating wheat, and I’ve lost weight (a lot)

My joints no longer ache, I dont need a cane anymore, I can raise my arms over my head without shoulder pain, I no longer have extreme heartburn daily, i have more energy and have lost weight

Going gluten free is not for everyone- but it is NOT expensive- don’t buy crappy gluten free food- just eat meat and vegetables.

Biggest bonus- I am not hungry all the time anymore. I used to constantly be snacking, I have not done that in years.

I just saw my first lawyer ad pitch for people who took Zantac and developed cancer.

Omeprazole (Prilosec) isn’t a sub for Zantac. Completely different modes of action. And IMO, Primosec shouldn’t be over-the-counter, because it shouldn’t be taken continuously for more than about a month. Also, it interferes strongly with anti-clotting drug Plavix, a dangerous situation for heart and stroke patients.

I take 40 mg of pepcid (generic-—tambourine) every night. Used to wake up with acid in my throat. Rarely happens with the pepcid.

Don’t do that if you have high blood pressure. Baking soda will drive it up.

So what are we down to, Pepcid AC?

I don't get heartburn much, only when I go to bed (laying down, etc.). Not sure what causes it, spicy food is a guess, though...
