Barack and Michelle Obama Want to Hear Your Stories About How Your Neighborhood Shaped You
Newsweek ^ | 9/27/2019 | Chantil Da Silva

Alongside a photo of the two siblings standing outside together, Obama wrote: "When I think back to some of the earliest days of my childhood, I remember moments like this—my brother Craig and I, smiling outside on the South Side of Chicago."

"It was there, in a diverse and changing neighborhood, that I began a journey that took me to settings I never could have imagined at that age. It's the place that made me who I am," she said.

Today, Obama is known around the world as a former first lady, an established lawyer and the author of a best-selling memoir, Becoming. Meanwhile, her brother, Craig Robinson, who is two years older than his sister, had built a career as a college basketball coach and broadcaster before landing his current role as the vice president of player and organizational development for the New York Knicks.(snip)

"I'm thinking about my neighborhood because in a few weeks, Barack and I will be joining changemakers from the South Side and around the world for our third Obama Foundation Summit," she said.

The Obama Foundation Summit takes place on October 28 and 29 and is expected to include "stories from authors and artists, luminaries and leaders, about how the places they've been made them the people they've become." (snip)

The former first lady then asks Obama Foundation supporters to "show us a place that shaped you" and "tell us how that place gives you purpose," providing a link to a form that supporters can fill out.

Submissions are expected to be featured at the Summit, as well as on Obama.org, Obama said, "so that guests can witness the stories of folks like you who help support the Obama Foundation and make our work possible."

The lefties in the neighborhood inspired us to move out of the city. Now we have deer, birds and other of Gods creatures as neighbors.

Sure. I lived in a predominately southern white military base housing area most of my life up to my 30's, both as a dependent then while on active duty.

It was clean, drug free full of kids, then adults my age and everybody was sociable. You could leave your doors unlocked even when you went on leave for 14 days.

If you needed help, your neighbors were there to actually help, not whip out their iphones for a youtube posting.

We had block parties in the summer and snow shovel parties in the winter.

We respected our fathers because they had the rank that got us there. Yes, we all had fathers and mothers.

Sorry there barack and the mooch, I know you didn't want to hear that.

The Wookie did me a great big favor and let me know that being white was what was wrong with the country.

I did not grow up in a neighborhood. I grew up on a large cattle ranch in Northern Arizona. We lived very remote, did not have neighbors- well we did but they were miles away.

I am pretty sure she is not interested in anyone that grew up in rural America.

I grew up in the mean streets of suburban Dallas, where we saluted the flag, loved Ronald Reagan, and never believed we’d see a Somalian witch spreading anti-American hatred in the halls of Congress.

As a ‘white’ kid growing up in a predominantly ‘black’ area I had the misfortune of being judged by the color of my skin on many occasions if I left my local neighborhood. It taught me that we should be judged as individuals or the culture we show affinity to rather than merely by our appearance.

I grew up on what used to be the eastern outskirts of Tucson, AZ. We had great neighbors, no crime, some people had horses, no one locked their doors and everyone had guns.
I doubt that Barky wants to know how my neighborhood influenced me.

I grew up in a great neighborhood.

Then they bussed me into a school on the other side of the city. There I was beaten, chased, gum in the hair, pushed down stairs, burned with cigarettes. I had to stop going to school in eighth grade. My father had to sell our home and move us out to the suburbs so I could get back to school.

Because I was white.
