CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WTVC) — One family says their 5-year-old son with autism is being punished for giving his classmate a hug. East Ridge Elementary leaders say the boy overstepped his boundaries. But, his family says the whole thing is a big misunderstanding.
Nathan is a 5-year-old boy kindergartner at East Ridge Elementary. The principal says the school staff has talked with him several times. His guardian says the school has filed a report with the state.
Summery Putnam, Nathan's guardian, says she received a call from her son's teacher at East Ridge Elementary about three weeks ago.
"I was sick to my stomach," Putnam said. "The teacher called me and she said, 'You need to have a talk with Nathan about boundaries.'"
Putnam says Nathan has autism, which she says can make it difficult for him to understand social cues. "If you don't understand how autism works, you'll think he's acting out or being difficult," Putnam said. "But, that's not the situation." Putnam says the teacher said Nathan was overstepping boundaries. She says the teacher accused her son of sexual activities after she was told he hugged a child and kissed another child on the cheek.

Hope they find a different school, this is awful.
Now is a good time for him to learn to keep his hands to himself.
I’ll say it again - “academics” and “educators” are usually the stupidest people you will ever meet.
They should declare their kid a Climate expert then everyone will want to hug him.

The teacher is at fault here, not the child. Calling state authorities in this is creepy.
Now is a good time for him to learn to keep his hands to himself.
So branding him as a Sex Offender for the rest of his life is going to accomplish this, how?
Or will it just ruin his life.
I came from a very touchy, hugging family. When I was 5, my teacher sent a note home to my Mother telling her to teach me keep my hands to myself.
This was in 1955.

It's a safe bet that every "educator" involved in this travesty has an advanced degree.
My daughter at age 5 in kindergarten was kissed on the playground by an older guy. He was a first grade boy. I never made a big deal about it.
They should go to the next school district event and when they see people hug as a greeting, take a picture and turn the in.
Schools’ staff and administration are just as immature, mentally undeveloped and childish as the students.

every boy in her class needs to be taken out into other classes for their protection from her. and probably,the school since the school is backing her.
thismis where you are sending your boys, dads. thats the supported atmosphere in public schools in 2019. not the ones youmand i went to school in.
