I feel bad for the stranded travelers but I don’t feel bad for Thomas Cook at all.

We stayed at a hotel in the Canary Islands last March that was almost completely filled with people who had booked tours through TUI, a competitor of Thomas Cook. We didn't know that when we booked it and we didn't fly with them. They did a great job and now they have bought that hotel so I don't even know if we can book it privately any more. If we could we would book it again.

First I've heard of this travel agency, but I'm not a fan of Airbnb either.

In this day n age with all the nut bars, pervs and creeps out there, renting a place to stay at a person's house/condo/etc is rolling the dice that the owner doesn't have cams hidden who knows where.

That, and their cancellation policy isn't as forgiving in general.

I hope you won’t end up like Cook’s customers.

Airbnb is just one option. You can book anything online from hotels as well.

The biggest problem with Cooks customers is that they were left stranded. We book our own flights so the airline would have to go bust. If we happened to be in a hotel when everything folded we would be able to get home and file a dispute with our credit card company.

“stranding hundreds of thousands”

Damned shame nobody knew they were going bankrupt!

I suppose it would be fraud if anyone knew.

Well, nobody could have known.

We booked a house in Tenby, Wales for June of 2020 through Home and Away, a company similar to Airbnb. Tenby has very few hotels with good sea views because all of the available space was taken up by houses long before it became a destination resort. We choose how we stay based on the location and our goal for the vacation. The place we stayed at in the Canary Islands was an all-inclusive resort. The place in Tenby will just be the 2 of us relaxing with a drink on the terrace, enjoying the view. The view from our own terrace is actually just as nice if not nicer, and definitely warmer, but Tenby is a place where my wife used to vacation as a child. This Friday we will be going to Bruges and Brussels, Belgium, staying in regular old hotels and enjoying the sights of the cities. Being retired has been a fun experience so far.

Disputes with credit card companies aren't what they used to be. It appears they no longer have to provide one with an image of a signed charge slip even for charges above $500, and even when there were two charges on the same bill for a car to be rented by me with identical pick-up and drop-off info.

"You can book anything online from hotels as well."

Of course. It's really been the only way to book a hotel for at least a decade now.

Actually online aggregators are useful sometimes to catch specials from tour companies once in a while. Works if you are in a lazy mood at the time.
