A raccoon in southwest Florida was in for a wild ride this week after it managed to hang on to the top of a Wonder Bread delivery truck making its rounds for more than 16-miles. The delivery truck driver said the furry stowaway managed to ride on top of the truck for more than 16 miles at 55 mph.

The driver sounded the alarm with 911 once he realized his truck had a stowaway and sounded worried about the raccoon in audio of the call released by WBBH-TV.

Dispatcher: "911, what is your emergency?" Driver: "Yeah, I didn't know who to call, but I have a raccoon on top of my bread truck....and everyone has been beeping me on the street telling me, you got something up there!" Driver: "I got out of the truck and I look up and there's a raccoon up there." Driver: "He's scared. I didn't know who to call." Dispatcher: "All right, we'll go ahead and get someone out there to help you, OK?" Driver: "OK, you're the best. Thank you."

This will die down until the driver goes into politics and runs as an ‘R’

THEN the story will resurface with quotes etc from the ‘coon.

There used to be a guy who drove by here around 3-4 times a week, He had a chocolate Lab on top of the cab. The dog looked around and barked at every thing he saw.

Yes this is Florida and the dog loved it. There was a piece of carpet somehow attached to the cab top. It eventually ended, probably when a cop saw him.

Are raccoons social animals? I worry that it’ll never see its family again. This stuff keeps me up.

Florida’s temperate climate offers abundant, year-round sources of water and food for Raccoons. They thrive and often make a nuisance of themselves. Like human teenagers, adolescent Raccoons are especially prone to misadventure. I surmise that the joyriding Raccoon was such a youngster.

In the 50’s, I was a kid then, in Northern Jersey we had Duggan’s cake and bread truck. He would come up to the front door with a wide variety of cakes/cookies/bread to choose from. Also had milk delivery, think it was Borden’s, and a milk box outside incase no one was home. Those were the days.
