ORLANDO, Fla. (CNN/WKMG) A Florida grandmother was shocked to find out her 6-year-old granddaughter had been arrested Thursday for throwing a tantrum.
Meralyn Kirkland says Kaias journey to the juvenile detention center by Orlando Police Officers began at Lucious and Emma Nixon Elementary charter school.
What do you mean she was arrested, he said there was an incident and she kicked somebody and she is being charged and she is on her way,' Kirkland explained.
The disorienting chaos was too much for Kirkland to process.
She has a medical condition that we are working on getting resolved and he says, what medical condition, she has a sleep disorder, sleep apnea, and he says, well I have sleep apnea and I dont behave like that.
First grader Kaia was handcuffed and carted off where Kirkland says she was fingerprinted and even had a mug shot taken.

“A child with sleep apnea??? Ill bet shes obese as well as having a lot of other problems.”
She is and so is grandma. Looks like it runs in the family. Not sure if it’s genetic, bad eating or both.

Absolutely.
Zero tolerance rules protect school administrators no longer allowed to think and reason, to put things in context, to make judgement calls - just follow the rules. Eventually it is dummies who take school administrator jobs because it only takes a dummy to just follow rules.
Should the child have been suspended and escorted home? Yes. Arrested? No.
In our 1st primary school the principle had a detention room close by. A non-behaving student could sit there all day if their parent was unable to pick them up or receive them at home. They got lunch brought to them; not allowed to mix with the other students at all. They were even escorted to the teachers lounge, to use the restroom there if they needed it.
Isolation is punishment at six years old.
We are talking about a six-year old!
Couldn’t they handle it without the police?
Maybe the child was serving “Triple Life”....
“Forget Kindergarten, get your ass back in the penitentiary, you know what you did the last time you was here.”
-Richard Pryor
See that’s is why I’m so glad I did not become a teacher.!
Yes I remember some of that too! I was in HS when they started to remove the paddle but as HS kids we had the feeling that if these kids did not want to behave then just suspend them. We wanted to learn we wanted to be there and if they did not then send them on their own to work at McDonalds.
Really though it starts young and you have to make kids behave as little as possible if you want them behaving as HS kids and adults. I don’t know the story about this little girl, I’m not in her life but I do know how she would have been punished for this in my day. At the very least she would have been ask to apologize to that other child and shake hands, at the very most she would have her parents called or been paddled or sent home for a day or so. Back then you did not want this, you did not want your parents knowing you were bad at school.
It’s much safer to arrest a six-year old girl throwing a fit than it is to arrest somebody like Nikolas Cruz who poses actual, documented danger.
Reminds me of the saying “Raise your children well or you will raise your grandchildren”.
Arrested for kicking. The brat needs a spanking.
Too many lawyers and too few parents involved in these kids lives.
This is a school system where “caring for children” is an abstract concept. Traumatizing a young child with police imprisonment guarantees that child will grow to become precisely what they are teaching him to become, a criminal.
Florida Kid — spawn of Florida Man. She probably did this before — 3 strikes. I wonder if her victim was seriously hurt.
Fixed it.
Why dont they arrest superfa members for throwing much more violent and destructive tantrums?
But, that is absolutely the proper solution since grandma in these situations typically refused to forgo staying home and parenting her child in order to buy nice stuff and develop and impressive resume. If you are there disciplining and nurturing your child they generally turn out well.
Guess what?
If you screw something up because you refuse to do what you were supposed to do then you often get to do it over until you do it right.
No sympathy for Grandma.
She has a medical condition that we are working on

sleep apnea? we used to bet put down for naps if we liked it or not..............
Why in the world would they arrest a six year old for a tantrum? Because the idiotic parents and voters in the district created a situation where the district cannot simply expel unruly children.
