CINCINNATI Coney Island opened its first roller coaster, called Dip The Dips, in 1911. That was just one milestone in a long history of fun attractions at the park where Walt Disney used to visit to get ideas for Disneyland.
Now, 108 years later, theres only one day left to enjoy the rides at the popular east-side, Ohio River landmark, which once held the title of Americas top amusement park.
TAKE a nostalgic look at Coney Island rides in the 1960s and 70s:
Coney is removing its rides after Saturday - the last day of the park season. The park and the rides - are open from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. as part of Coney's International Fireworks Competition.
Soon, there will only be memories of the 21 rides still at the park, including the Python, Scrambler, Tempest and Tilt-A-Whirl, as well as long-ago favorites like the Shooting Star, Wild Mouse, Lost River and Wildcat. Not to mention the Sky Ride, Turnpike, Carousel and others that were removed in the 1960s and 70s, when Coney closed for two years - and nearly forever.
Like generations of Tri-Staters, Dennis Speigel, who now runs a company that oversees theme park projects in several countries, has many fond memories of Coney - and moreso. He started working there in 1959 as a ticket-taker while he was in high school.

Walt Disney was trying to make Disneyland not like Coney Island.
Bring back “Action Park!”
“A lot of people dont know that Walt Disney came to Coney Island many, many times to get ideas for Disneyland in California,
Yeah buy WD didn’t think of “Gay Day” when he went to the Coney.
Just to clarify, this is in Ohio and has nothing to do with the original Coney Island, NY where there will still be all sorts of things to ride for years to come.

It also had MOONLIGHT GARDENS where people dressed up and went to DANCE on SATURDAY nites! And the rides were GREAT and it was WHOLESOME...
It was also the stop for the PADDLEWHEEL boats that PLIED the OHIO RIVER...
.sad ending.....kids have NO idea what they missed....WHOLESOME ENTERTAINMENT!
Whatutalkin’ bout, Willis?
They used to have wonderful concerts there too. I saw Frank Sinatra when I lived there in the early 80s.
I remember Coney Island well. I loved the carousel, steeple chase, the wonder wheel, roller coast, and especially the parachute. All gone but not forgotten. I was very young when Luna Park burned to the ground. What will happen to The famous Nathan’s?
I remember Action Pk. aka TRACTION Park. Everytime we went we’d be at our chiropractors office the next day with stiff necks and backaches. He made a ton of $$$$ from that crazy place
This is the Coney Island of the 1070s that I remember:
White people were pretty cool
Destroying America brick by brick.
There is no Nathans at Coney Island in Ohio.
Wow, you’ve lived a really long time!
Never been there but some friends of mine from Ohio who moved to Cincinnati have. They posted some pics on FB and it looked very nice.
