Jimmy Page was interviewed for a cover story in the latest issue of Uncut, where he talks about the potential of a LED ZEPPELIN film, career regrets (or not), and carrying on the legacy of ZEPPELIN as the best band in the world.
Speaking to writer Michael Bonner about why he feels no other bands could come close to LED ZEPPELIN, Page said: "It's really hard to say something like that and not sound conceited, but over the years, a lot of other musicians have told me they thought we were the best. I'm not talking about record sales or concert attendance, although I think we can hold our own with anyone. What I mean is: when you talk about a band as a collaborative musical unit, we were the best. I am not talking about one or two genius songwriters, and everyone else tagging along. I am talking about a collection of musicians who are each at the top of their craft in their own right. In LED ZEPPELIN, we were exactly that."
Elaborating on why he previously told interviewer Charlie Rose in 2012 that LED ZEPPELIN was the best band in the world while Robert Plant demurred, Page said: "If you are a young musician and you want to hear how a band works well together, then we're a pretty good blueprint. John [Paul Jones] and me. Robert and me. John Paul Jones and John Bonham. Every combination of the quartet could bring something special. Robert probably said, 'Oh, well, there were a lot of great bands,' to that interviewer because that is the gentlemanly reply. And I agree with him...But when you are talking about rock 'n' roll alchemy, I had to say what I thought. We were the best."

Plasmatics at The Factory in Staten Island. Just kidding. I saw Zep in ‘77 at Madison Square Garden. The Plasmatics, thogh. I still don’t know what I saw.
I was waiting for someone to say this. Iron maiden is actually the best band on the planet even if one doesn’t like metal. The historically significant songs and superior vocals (Bruce) and the rest are all second to none. I don’t see how this is even up for discussion.

btw I would encourage you to check out this video of Juma Sultan who played percussion for Jimi at Woodstock. He hjas some really interesting insights into the scene back then and what was happening around Jimi. To be sure, his politics may lean left (though I've met Juma and he is DEFINITELY a capitalist) but it is worth the 80 mins.
I saw The Hooters at a Philly burbs high school in 1984 right before their debut album came out. They were awesome. But they had enough gear for The Spectrum. Loudest concert ever. My ears were ringing for 2-3 days.
OK, "Hot Dog" is rather embarrassing and I'll never understand how that ever made it on the album. But through the magic of iTunes, I have that track surgically removed forever.
It's a shame about that drummer dying for I think Zeppelin was reaching a creative peak and would have had a great run during the 1980s as well. Robert Plant's "Big Log" is a hint of what could have been.
I’m not a fan of ITTOD at all, but Carouselambra is easily one of their top 5 tunes ever. Further, while Moon is my favorite drummer, Bonham’s shuffle on Fool in the Rain shows how deep he could be on the drums. Finally, JPJ had basically taken over creative control of Zeppelin and he can be forgiven for overdoing it on the keys.
Greatest concert I ever attended was Metallica on the Justice tour in 1988.
