HOCKLEY, Texas - A robbery at a drive-in theater in northwest Harris County ended with one of the suspects dead after a manager opened fire, authorities said.
The incident happened around 2:30 a.m. Monday at the Showboat Drive-In Theater on FM 2920 in Hockley, according to the Harris County Sheriff's Office.
Authorities said preliminary information suggests two men sneaked into the concession stand while it was still open and waited for it to close.
They came out when they thought everyone was gone, but two managers were still upstairs and they heard rummaging, authorities said.
Owner Andrew Thomas said one of the managers went to investigate and encountered the men.
"At least one of them had a bat and hit her a couple times," Thomas said. "That's when she pulled her gun out (and opened fire)."
One of the men was killed at the scene, the other took off running across the empty parking lot, authorities said.
Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez commended the women for being in tune with their surroundings and jumping into action.
"These two ladies were pretty alert and sharp, it seems, and took care of business," Gonzalez said.
Authorities say the man who was killed was wearing a mask. The would-be burglars had a baseball bat and at least one knife, deputies said.
Deputies tried tracking down the second person, but so far have been unable to find him, authorities said.
But how else will they get money?

Dont bring a Baseball Bat to a gunfight there G.
Folks here have been adding the keyword, “armedcitizen,” to these threads. Makes looking them up easier.
Looks like they are making the headline intentionally vague to make it appear it may have been a bystander that was hit. Suspect dead would have been more clear.
Right. Being hit a couple of times with a baseball bat does it for me.
I didn’t know there were any drive-in theaters left.
Not too far from where we once lived. The woods out there are full of very well armedcitizens. They had better stay that way.
Awesome! What is up with all these masked intruders? Really terrifying.

Freep me your address and I will send you a roll of tinfoil.
Actually, I agree with the poster that the headline implied a bystander or other innocent. Perhaps you need some tinfoil glasses.

And there is the difference between Texas, and a few other states, and the blue states.
As a Texas State Trooper once told me, “around here there are two reasons to stop shooting. First is if you run out of ammo which should never happen. Second is when the body stops twitching.”
Thanks
Around 1952 or so, my Brothers and I would climb in the back of the Isle of View in Panama City, FL. We would turn the nearest speaker on high.
The only real problem was ants. I don’t think the owner really cared. We certainly were not going to drive in and pay.
4 dead bad guys around the country in the last couple of days. Keep this up the crime problem will take care of itself!
