Weeks shy of his 95th birthday, former President Jimmy Carter said Tuesday he doesnt believe he could have managed the most powerful office in the world at 80 years old.
Carter, who earlier this year became the longest lived chief executive in American history, didnt tie his comments to any of his fellow Democrats running for president, but two leading 2020 candidates, Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders, would turn 80 during their terms if elected.
Biden is 76. Sanders is 78.
I hope theres an age limit, Carter said with a laugh as he answered audience questions at his annual report at the Carter Center in Atlanta. If I were just 80 years old, if I was 15 years younger, I dont believe I could undertake the duties I experienced when I was president.
Carters remarks came in response to a jovial inquiry about whether he had considered running in 2020 since hes still constitutionally allowed another term. The 39th president left office in 1981 at the age of 56 after losing his reelection bid to Ronald Reagan, who served two terms and left office as the oldest sitting president in history, at 77.
Either Biden or Sanders would be older upon their inauguration than Reagan was on his final day in the Oval Office. At 73, President Donald Trump is a record-setter, as well. He eclipsed Reagans mark as the oldest newly elected president in history and would become the oldest president to be reelected, as well.

I’m but 63 and I’m not sure I could handle it either.
I think he was 53 when he became president. Couldn’t handle it at that age either.
He couldn’t have done it at 40.
Truly the dumbest President in modern times.
....hiding behind Christianity....just like a particular Mayor from Indiana.
You didn’t manage the Presidency at whatever your age was in 1976.
LOL!
I vehemently agree.
He was 52, JFTR.
Carter Doctrine.
Look it up.
He did and/or avoided a lot of bad sh!t.
But he made some good decisions too.
He’s a Nazi compared to the current crop of degenerate Democrats.
Of all ex-presidents to cast aspersions.
Jimmy Carter remains the ‘Most unfavorite’ ex president for many people of either party. I guess he wanted to throw his two cents in there to say Joe Biden is too old for the job.
Thanks for your input, Mr. President. Now git!
He couldn’t manage when he was much younger and was president.
“Jimmy Carter remains the Most unfavorite ex president for many people of either party.”
That’s unfortunate.
He has been highly underrated IMHO.
He had hints of SJW and was clearly left of center...
But ask yourself this question: How did his foreign policy differ from POTUS Trump’s? How did his domestic policy differ?
Exactly what I was thinking.
“You couldn’t manage it when you were 53, Jimmah.”
In the meantime you old nut,you should give back your Nobel peace prize for making “peace” on the Korean peninsula.
He was better than Obama because he only lasted one term.
I was going to write that exact same thing, but I thought to myself “Better read the comments first. That has to be what somebody else wrote.” Sure enough.
This. He lives in an alternate reality. He has no idea that he was the second worst president in history.
He couldnt manage in it 1975.
I dont think that PDJT would have let the Iranian debacle happen.
