Leading off in the ballgame. Disappointed the Boston fans didn't give him a standing O. I know he plays for the Giants but out of legacy/respect the fact that his name is royalty in those parts would have honored him more. BTW he's a 29 year old rookie. Lucky to be in the biggies. He'll have to keep working hard to stay.
Price is down for the count with a cyst in his wrist, I believe. Tried it about a week back, and it wasn’t right yet. May or may not see him again this season.

My Dad and brother were there the night Conigliaro went down, it was just as I was really becoming aware of pro ball, at 7 years old. What timing. Listening to Jim Lonborg hit a home run in the late innings, under the covers, on my little Sunoco gas pump transistor radio, when I was supposed to be asleep...halcyon days.
They say that Ted Williams was kind of a dick too. He had a love-hate relationship with Red Sox fans.
As kids in the 1970s, my brother and I amassed quite an autograph collection mainly by writing to active baseball players in care of their teams and retired greats in care of the Hall of Fame or addresses published in Who’s Who, etc. The kindness and thoughtfulness of many of these players was amazing. Koufax, Mantle, Aaron to name a few. Real old timers like Burleigh Grimes and Stan Coveleski. Even celebrities like Groucho Marx, Bing Crosby and composer Aaron Copland. Yaz never responded even though many other Red Sox did, like Fred Lynn, Jim Rice and Luis Tiant. No hard feelings but I guess I am not as excited about his grandson as I would have been if Yaz was less stingy with his signature.

As a Red Sox fan, I have the utmost respect and admiration for the fans of St. Louis, who beat us in a hard-fought Series in ‘67; when we played them again in 2004, I will never forget the class of their fans in Game 4. As the game progressed, it became clear that the Juggernaut of Cosmic Destiny was not to be denied, and a number of the St. Louis fans reportedly went outside and asked the Boston fans who were gathered in the street to take their seats, because they ought to get to see this. Now, damnit, that’s class. More than any other city I know, the people of St. Louis know and appreciate the sport of baseball. They get it. And I was happy to see them win it two years later.

Those were the days. I caught the games on TV but used to listen to the Jerry Williams talk radio show when my parents thought I was asleep.
Poor Jerry Williams—he never had a dinner! The other one I remember was Gene Shepard, always talking about that magical age, when you were free enough to fly out the screen door letting it slam behind you—Where are you going? -Out. What are you doing—I don’t know. Flying, literally flying on your bike to Nowhere or Anywhere in a Big Hurry to do Nothing Special. The magical time of freedom and no serious responsibilities to speak of.
I was kinda maybe good enough to get a scholarship in college, and also have four family members who played in the majors, as well as my college roommate. Just like the general population there are a lot of pricks, and a heck of a lot of them are pretty normal people, just more talented than I am.
I spent more than a decade working in the high end college and pro sports environment. I was around a lot of these guys. A vast majority were nice, helpful, and even concerned that I was able to get my job done when around them.
The number of jerks stand out because they tended to be the ones people “idolized.” I can understand a lot of that. But, some of them stand out more than the others.
The 3rd generation of baseball players. Mike’s dad (Carl’s son) was a baseball player, also.
There are two types. Most are the type that had a lot of talent, but made it big by drive, desire and hard work. Then there are the truly gifted ones, everything came easy to them. I’ve been around some of both. When my kids were growing up and they had uncles that were playing or in management, they got to go to lots of games free, in different cities, and sat with the player’s kids. It was quite an experience for them, my son also played smaller college ball, I have a picture of him playing catch in the yard when he was 11 or 12. Four of the kids (who were a little older than him) that he was playing catch with made it to the majors. One is currently a GM of a MLB team.
