Leading off in the ballgame. Disappointed the Boston fans didn't give him a standing O. I know he plays for the Giants but out of legacy/respect the fact that his name is royalty in those parts would have honored him more. BTW he's a 29 year old rookie. Lucky to be in the biggies. He'll have to keep working hard to stay.
He’s done a lot better than I thought a 29 year old rookie would do.
— yeah. Why wouldn’t Boston fans give him a standing ovation to honor his grandfather?
Maybe off topic, but my experience in recent years, is that a lot of people at the ballgame nowadays don’t seem to be big baseball fans. They don’t know the players or the rules or the history of the game..
Even at Fenway, and considering that Yaz retired in 1983, before some of these fans were born, the fact that Yaz’s grandson was playing may not have registered with many people.
He played until he was 44 years old. It's been 35 years since his last game. Can't believe his grandson is now in the majors. Good luck to him.
A borderline Giants player hit a monumental homer in the playoffs, getting them in the world series. A couple years later he played for the Pirates and receiver tho most wonderful ovation. Name was Travis Ishikawa. Another World Series hero Randy Vogelsong took a line drive to the head while pitching for the Pirates years later. The well wishes he received in the hospital from San Francisco fans who remembered him was very heartwarming. Baseball fans are great because the game is great.

Umm... Obviously you’re not from Boston. You couldn’t be from around here and not know what it’s like. The ‘67 Red Sox were a cultural phenomenon in this region that transcends generations, culture, ethnicity, class, politics, and sports interests. People who hate baseball know. People who don’t care about any sports know. The drunks and heroin addicts know. People who moved here from another planet and have been here 3 years or more know. It’s in the water. In the dirt. In the bricks and the slime on the street.
Yes, it has registered. With everyone. And they all wish Mike the best.
Except against us in a game that counts for something.
Yaz just hit a home run at Fenway.
As I expected, he homers and everybody’s up!
No I am not from Boston. I have visited and have been to Fenway Park, but am not from there.
I appreciate the history you mention. I was sharing what I thought might be going on, based on the original poster expressing disappointment that Mike Yaz didn’t get an ovation because of who he was.
My daughter is at her first baseball game tonight at Fenway. I’ll ask her.
A GREAT career! Leftfielder/First Baseman. 1961-1983. 3419 hits, 452 home runs, .285 batting average, 1816 runs, 1844 rbi. Almost 200 stolen bases plus outstanding defense! Beyond clutch in the field and at bat during the ‘67, pennant race, ALL year long.
Because he isnt his grandfather, and he is on the other team.
This should be a secret.
He doesnt deserve an SO. Hes a rookie.
If youve met him or been around him (Yaz the elder), he is kind of a dick. Not friendly. Even if you are around him for other reasons, he acts like you are there because of him. And he could not be less interested.
Don’t forget being the ONLY American Leaguer to bat .300 in 1968, and one of a handful to win the Triple Crown (H-HR-RBI) in 1967.
BINGO, so did I. Loved the Sox back then so many great players.
Bump
Wonder if David Price was pitching? He and Yaz both played at Vandy.
I have never met him but I did get that impression of him from old SPORT Magazine articles.
Can’t forget that ‘68 item! Tied with The Killer in HR’s in the ‘67 Triple Crown Year. He had great stats in the 7 game WS loss vrs. the Cards that year also.
Brings back good memories of the Cardiac Kids.
