In an exclusive U.S. TV interview, Edward Snowden said he would like to return home but that the U.S. won't agree to a fair trial.
"I would like to return to the United States. That is the ultimate goal. But if I'm gonna spend the rest of my life in prison, the one bottom line demand that we have to agree to is that at least I get a fair trial. And that is the one thing the government has refused to guarantee because they won't provide access to what's called a public interest defense," Snowden told "CBS This Morning."
The former NSA contractor is shedding new light on his decision to reveal classified documents about the U.S. government's mass surveillance program back in 2013. Snowden disclosed government programs that collected Americans' emails, phone calls and internet activity in the name of national security and was subsequently charged under the Espionage Act for doing so. A congressional report said his disclosures "caused tremendous damage to national security."
In his new memoir, "Permanent Record," Snowden tells his story in detail for the first time and speaks about his life in exile in Russia. Snowden, who now identifies himself as a privacy advocate, said his biggest issue with standing trial in the U.S. is that the government won't allow the jury to consider his motivations.

What should happen to everyone who participated in violating the Constitution and allowing an ineligible usurper to take office and turn the entire government against the citizens?
He would just end up dead. Killed by his pillow.
Julian Assange has been fighting arrest and extradition to the USA ever since he made the mistake of getting involved with some women in Scandinavia. It appears that US pressure on Sweden, Ecuador, and Great Britain have contributed to his woes.
Russia is safe than Scandinavia. They pretend they are free, but have no trouble playing along with the CIA.
He exposed criminals illegally spying on US people at home, and lying about it to congress. They were doing nothing less than building the infrastructure of a turn key police state.
He had zero chance of being a whistleblower. He saw precisely what happened when William Binney tried that just a few years before. Binney went to the DOD IGs office to report wrongdoing. He also went to the House intelligence committee.
This resulted in being raided by a dozen FBI agents at gunpoint who yanked him out of the shower. The same raid was launched against two co-workers who went to the IG with him. A staffer for the House intelligence committee was also raided.
His security clearance was revoked, and he lost the ability to work in his field. Snowden saw exactly what happened to whistleblowers who follow the prescribed route. So he wisely found another route to expose America’s budding Stasi.
Point made. Originally, I was going to suggest Switzerland but I don’t think they’re immune to international pressure either.
“He needs to be arrested, tried and executed as a trader.”
The ones who need to be tried and executed are the ones who created a domestic surveillance and spy network outside the law and lied to Congress about it...on TV.
No matter how you dance around it, widespread, pervasive, all-encompassing spying on your own people is the mark of places like Red China, Nazi Germany, East Germany, and the USSR. It has no place in America.
“A patriot does not send classified information to russia and china.”
And still to this day this is “alleged” and never proven. Claimed by the very same government who absolutely lied and said that they would never commit the crime of spying on every law abiding person in the world.
But this government would never lie about Snowden to cover and distract from their own criminal actions right? They got busted so they had to invent someway to accuse the accuser to make their own crimes appear the lesser in comparison.
And because we all know there is a terrorist under every bed and in every closet like they told us we took the bait hook line and sinker. We were played like a fiddle.
I don’t think he should ever come back.
He is in a better place for his situation but, if he wants and receives the fair trial he is asking for, rhen God Speed...
+1
Interesting. Maybe Andy McCarthy will write an article about this.
Very good summary of the historical facts man. How soon we forget how serious this situation truly was indeed. And they are STILL doing it with the support of the brainwashed sheep.
Once you’re on that jury, your pets will be killed and your children and wife tailed by obvious FBI guys to send you a message to vote to convict.
Go read the documents he released . WikiLeaks has them online. Tell us how many are marked classified.
Even if they all are, would a gang of burglars tell the owner of the house they are going to come steal stuff? No, of course it would be “classified information” to the criminals or they would get busted in the act.
